    -Forbids people from owning, selling, or trasding slaves.
    -All slaves are now considered free and anybody found with slaves would be severely punished in the court of law.
    -Could be considered start of the Civil Rights Movement.

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    -Court case that decided that segragation was legal in all public buildings, as long as the establishment were equal
    -Led to race segragation that lasted for almost 60 years
  • Jakie Robinson joins Brooklyn Dodgers

    Jakie Robinson joins  Brooklyn Dodgers
    -First African American to join major league sports
    -Faced major discrimination from both sport fans and his own team
    -Allowed for the later enterance of African American players into major league sports
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    -Boycott started by Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat to a white man
    -Martin Luther King set up the offical boycott and encouraged the other African Americans to not ride buses
    -Boycott lasted 381 days
  • Little Rock Central High School allows first black student

    Little Rock Central High School allows first black student
    -9 black students requested entrance to the school in 1954, but were denied by the court
    -Sparked a movement from the black community that forced the school to allow them to go to school there
    -Thousands of white people arrived at the day of their integration to oppose the action.
  • MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech

    MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech
    -Considered one of the best Civil Rights Speeches ever created, even though it had been drafted on King's ride to the rally
    -The speech won Dr. Matin Luther King Jr. a nobel peace prize and made him the man of the year.
    -Over 200,000 people came to watch the speech in Washington

    -Civil rights workers begin to register blacks to vote
    -Event leads to the burning of black schools and churches
    -Public outrage about killing of 3 citizens in the riots
  • Civil Rights Act passed

    Civil Rights Act passed
    -Act forbids any discrimination against people of different race, sex, religion, or creed.
    -This also ended segregation in all public places
    -Allowed all black people to be integrated into the white society
