  • Sweat v. Painter

    The supreme court ruled in Sweat v. Painter that state law schools had to admit qualified African Americans. This was a major victory for the NAACP
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Supreme court declares segregated schools are in unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education. This legislation was passed in May of 1954.
  • Rosa Parks

    The bus boycott begins when Rosa Parks, a leader in the black community, refused to give up her seat on the bus. This act started the bus boycotts!
  • SCLC

    Dr. King, a southern minister and a leader of the movement invited sixty black ministers to create SCLC. This would be known as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
  • Central High School

    Eisenhower sends troops into Little Rock, Arkansas. These troops were sent into Little Rock to desegergate this high school.
  • SNCC

    The "SNCC" was formed in April of 1960. SNCC stands for Student Nonviolent Coordinationg Commitee.
  • James Farmer

    James Farmer a CORE leader is a prominent leader of the Civil Rights Movement. In May he orginaized the first set of Freedom Riders.
  • "I have a dream"

    Dr. King gave this famous speech about equality in Washington, DC. This speech stands as a landmark speech in American history.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    The Civil Rights act of 1964 was signed into law in July of 1964.
  • Malcom X

    Malcom X, a major leaders of the Black Movement, was born in Omaha, NE. He was assasinated in 1965.
  • Voting Act Rights Act of 1965

    Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This outlawed discriminatory voting practices against African Americans.
  • Assasination of Martin Luther King

    Dr. King was assasinated on April 4, 1968. He was the face of the African American movement for equality.
