Civil rights 1950 - 1970

  • Start

    tis 1950
Note that the day that each event occured isn't exactly correct because I do not know what days they started exactly.
  • School Segregation

School segregation states that Blacks and Whites will each have "seperate but equal" schools
however segregation is inherently unequal and Blacks did not have many opportunities that Whites
    have.
  • 4 children murdered (unable to fit all in)

4 girls were mercilessly killed when the KKK threw a bomb into a church. The girls were not even
marchers, they only went to church. It was around now where people originally started to see the
racial inequality. A cruel gang killed four girls who did absolutely nothing. Other blacks felt like the
inequality is getting too high and started to really stand for themselves like Rosa and MLK. White
people were also inspired to help later on and there were many (no more words)
  • Rosa Park's standoff

Rosa Parks did not let a white passenger take her seat. She got arrested but inspired many other
black Americans to start fighting for their right. After her arrest, blacks of Montgomery started a
    successful one year bus boycott.
  • Bus Boycott

Black Americans of Montgomery started a boycott as a way to support Rosa Parks. This caused a
lot of problems for the Black people of that area as it was harder to get to places but it also caused
a ruckus of the White people as a sudden lack of black people going into busses would affect the
    money the government gets.
  • The Sitters

Black Americans went all around America, sitting in White only seats in restaurants. 9 of them were
arrested out of the ten but none of them fought back whole they were getting beaten up. This
inspired others to try nonviolent ways to protest
  • The Freedom Rides

Blacks rode busses all along America, staying in their seats the whole time. This caused a lot of
Whites to start beating them up and burn the bus down. It also brought sense to the government,
showing how cruel people can be to Blacks who don't even do anything, just sit in busses.
  • Enrolling at Uni

James Meredith enrols at the university of Mississippi. 5000 troops were sent to defend him so he
could register for classes. The riots had two deaths and more than a hundred injuries.
  • I Have A Dream

Martin Luther King Jr delivered the "I have a dream" speech to a large group of civil right believers
in the Lincoln memorial of Washington DC. This speech inspired people to fight for the rights of the
black people and was one of the key events to take place to cause the Civil Rights acts to pass.
  • Civil rights act

Civil rights act passed. This meant that there would official be equality (or more equality than there was before) but people would have continued to protest against it. There were many places that still holstered inequality.
  • Crossing Pettus Bridge

Black Americans peacefully attempted to cross the Pettus Bridge. The police used clubs, whips and even tear gas against them. 50 marchers were hospitalised. This event was considered one of the final pushes for voting rights for Black Americans because of the brutality they faced while not fighting back.
  • Legal Interracial Marriages!

Interracial marriages are now legal, meaning that blacks and white could marry legally. This would
promote the rights of black people because there would be more interracial couples about, as its
own way of saying that people of all race should be equal.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

The Civil Rights Act of 1968 is signed by President Johnson. No discrimination in the housing or estate for black people is allowed. Black people are allowed to buy "white houses" in "white land".
  • End.

    End of this timeline.
