  • Little Rock High School

    Little Rock High School
    In 1954, the "Brown vs Board of Education" decided that "seperate but equal" was not okay. On September 23, 1957 the Little Rock Nice went to their first day at school. They were the only black students at Little Rock High. Arkansas Governer Faubus called in the national gaurd to turn back the students, then President Eisenhower ordered the national gaurd to protect them. In 1958 Governer Faubus shut down the school instead of allowing integration.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    The Freedom Riders we attempting to test the Supreme Court's decision that banned the segregation of buses. They experienced great violence, the worst in Anniston, Alabama. The bus tires were slashed, the bus bombed and the riders beaten. This was almost the end of the Freedom Riders but Bobby Kennedy called the bus company and told them to continue. The Freedom Rides lead to the Interstate Commerce Commisions, banning segregation in all interstate travel facilities.
  • MLK's "I have a dream..."

    MLK's "I have a dream..."
    Martin Luther King Jr. gave his I have a dream speech to 250,000 in Washington D.C.. This speech is the most monumental speech of the Civil Rights movement. Both blacks and whites attended it and were moved by MLK's non-violent ideology.
  • Selma, Alabama March

    Selma, Alabama March
    When demonstrator Jimmy Lee Jackson was killed by police the civil rights movement was aggravated. To protest police brutality and to rember Jimmy Lee, MLK annoced a march from Selma to Montgomery on March 7. 600 protestors were tear gased and beaten and on March 21 the march began. It started with 3000 and finished with 25,000.
  • Black Panthers

    Black Panthers
    Stokely Carmichael was arrested on June 17, 1966 for setting up a tent at a all black HS. That night, protestors held a rally and he showed up beaten by the police. He started the slogan "black power." In October of 1966, the Black Panters became a political party to fight police brutality in ghettos. There were shoot outs with police and Carmichael publically preached about an armed revoly. (violent)
  • MLK Assassination

    MLK Assassination
    Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. That day the worst riots in US history occured in 125 cities. His assassination, along with Bobby Kennady's assassination on June 5, 1968, led to the end of the movement because of the lack of leadership and move towards violence.
