Christopher McCandless grew up in the Annandale. His father was an engineer at NASA until him and his wife, Billie, decided to break away and build up their own business from nothing. The business they created to lead to stress and time not spent with Chris and his sister, Carine. This is believed to be the cause of Chris's lack of contact with his family during his trip

Chris graduated high school in Virginia and moved to Georgia to attend Emory University. The last time Chris's family ever saw him was at his college graduation ceremony and later the graduation party. The next day, Chris took off in his yellow Datsun and headed west.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is where Chris pulled into the desert and later abandoned his car after a flash flood. Before the flood, Chris camped here for a few weeks after burning his money.

Chris buys a boat and sails down the Colorado River to Mexico where he then heads further west into California.

Chris returns to Lake Mead to get his stuff he abandoned with his Datsun

Chris meets a couple who will later become some of his closest companions. Jan Burress spots him and offers him a ride. They later provide food and transportation to him.
