    Sun Yixian leads the nationalist and overthrows the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.
    China faced years of humiliation being controlled ny foreign countries. Chineses people wamted modernization and nationalism. They decided it was time for a change, so Sun Yixian and the Kuomintang decided to put an end to the Qing Dyansty and overthrow their last amperor.
  • Sun Yixian becomes President

    Sun Yixian becomes President
    Sum held power for just six months due to his sudden death. He hoped to stablish a government based on his Three Principle of the People (nationalism, people´s rights and people´s livelihood) After Sun´s death he gave power to a man named Yuan Shikai.

    Yuan Shikai was a military dictator that took control of China in 1913. He contradicted Sun Yixian beliefs and he was basically a militar dictator. Many revolts were made against him even his own army refused to fight againts the revolt and his power was only taken away until he died.

    China declared war to Germany in hopes of getting their territory back. Instead the Treaty of Versailles gave Japan the territories and privileges that had previously belonged to Germany.

    The Treaty of Versailles created a sense of inconformity between chinese people. So a group of students made a protest throughout China where many chinese joined the cause. This demonstrated the Chinese people commitment of stablishing a modernized nation.
  • The Communist Party was formed.

    One of its most important leaders was Mao Zendong. Their goal was to create a centralized government.

    Communists and Nationalists decide to unite to fight together against the wardlords.After chinese people realized that they were being attacked, the communist and the nationlist decided to unite to win against the warlords
  • Jiang Jieshi becomes the leader of the Nationalist Party.

    Jiang Jieshi becomes the leader of the Nationalist Party.
    After the death of Sun Yixian, Jiang Jieshi becomes in charge of the Nationalists Party. At first Jiang Jieshi though it was better to put aside the differences between the nationalist and the communist, but after they successfully fought the wardlors he turned against the communist.

    Nationalist groups moved into Shanghái and many other cities. The Nationalist killed thousands of communist including leaders and trade unión members. They nearly wiped out everyone who belonged to the Chinese Communist Party.
  • The Nationalist Republic of China is formed.

    The Nationalist Republic of China is formed.
    This Republic is created and Jiang becomes the president. Other countries start to formally recognize this new government.
  • Peasants align with the Communists

    Peasants align with the Communists
    Nationalist Party does nothing to reform and make China better. This made peasants unhappy so they decided to align themselves with the Communists. Communists started to plan a way to, once again beging a war against the Nationalists.
  • Shiang Kai surrounds Communists

    Shiang Kai gathered an army of 700,000 to surround the Communists, gaving them no option but to leave.
  • The Long March

    The Long March
    Nationalists chased Communists over 6,000 miles through China. It lasted a year where the Communists kept only a step away ahead of the Nationalists. They fought several times until the Communists reached safety in northwestern China where they settle in caves. About 70,000 people died throughout the Long March.

    There were a lot of protests snd demands made by students asking for the Nationalist government to resist the Japanese attacks

    The japanese watched how the power of the chinese struggled so they took advantage of it and invaded Manchuria. Japan controlled a large part of China. The Japanese forced the Chinese to make a truce between the army of Jiang and Mao to fight against them, so they had to stop temporaly China´s civil war.

    First Nationalists victory against the Japanese army.Lots of weapons were captured from the Japanese, giving strength to the Nationalists

    The Japanese fought against the Chinese until Mao´s Red Army gained controlof northern China. And after a months of fighting the Japanese finally decided to surrender and return to Japan
  • Civil War continues

    Civil War continues
    When the Japanese invaded China, there was a civil war between Nationalist and Communists. The political opponents temporarily united to fight against the Japanese, but as soon as the war was over they rusumed their fight for the control of China.
  • The People´s Republic of China is created

    The People´s Republic of China is created
    At first the Nationalists had many advantages. They outnumbered the Communists by aproximaly three to one and they also had a lot of money. But with China´s economy collapsing and the lack of Nationalists support, Nationalists soilders started to go with the Communists. The remains of Jiang´s army fleed south and Mao Zendong gained control of the country, creating the People´s Republic of China.
  • The Republic of China is created

    The Republic of China is created
    The Nationalists flee to Taiwán, where the US helped Jiang set up a nationalists government on that island. And after setting up a government The Republic of China was created, dividing China into two different parts.
