    The Silk Road

    BCE. The Silk Road interlinked parts of Europe, lots of China, and bits of Africa together. It allowed merchants to travel and trade goods. In addition, it played an important part in spreading cultures and expanding religions and ideas. On top of all of this, it was extremely beneficial to China's economy especially because of paper and silk trade.

    Marco Polo

    Marco Polo was an explorer who adventured through Asia and was able to meet Kublai Khan. They ended up travelling together through Asia and are known for introducing Europeans into the Central Asia area.

    Mongol Conquest (esp. Genghis Khan & Kubilai Khan)

    The Mongol Conquest unified Mongolia and Turkey and contributed to the development of the Mongol empire that rapidly spread through China. Genhis Khan is credited with founding the empire the vastly spread empire. It played a key role in connect eastern and western Eurasia.

    Forbidden City

    Located in Bejing, the emporers palace was meant to look like where God would live in heaven. It is an imperial palace and plays an important role in Chinese government to this day.
  • Qing Dynasty

    1622-1912
    The last dynasty of China led by Nurhaci. It is significant because it was the last dynasty and the leader is credited with creating a script for the Manchu language. The dynatsy was most popular in the 18th century, when it expanded from 18 provinces to 22. It influenced many urban trends and Chinese ideas.

    The CCP stands for the Chinese Communist Party. Mao Tse-Tung was the leader of the Chinese Revolution and
  • Chiang Kai-Shek & Kuomintang

    Chiang was a political and military leader and strong member of the nationalist party. He was involved in the Nothern Expedition to unify China and was in favor of a nationalist authoritatian government. The Kuomintang was the Chinese Nationalist Party that supports the unification with the mainland.
  • Open Door Policy

    A policy that allows many Imperial powers the ability to equally use China for trade. Originally from the British, this polociy was a reflection of the Qing Dynasty and Opium Wars. It had an influencial role on the global economic development of the world.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Disputes with the U.S. Navy and the Boxer Rebellion led to uneasy alliance between the two. An anti-foreign sentiment developed a secret society that used martial arts and weapons to kill. Westerners were referred to as "boxers". As the violence continued, U.S. sent in troops. The entire event showed how vulnerable Europeans' imperial power was and solidified Chinas position above the US.
  • Revolution of 1911

    Couthern revolutionaries in China revolted against the Qing Dunasty and successfully established an end to the imperial system. The Republic of China now has elected assemblies and an almost entirely self-government.
  • Long March

    A military retreat between the Red Army of the Communist Party of China and the forerunner of the People's Liberation Army. It's purpose was to evade the pursuit of the Kuomintang army. It is significant because it was the start of Mao Zedong's rule of power.
  • Japanese Invasion/Occupation

    Military forces of the Empire of Japan invaded Singapore. It became inportant to Japan and led to Britian returning to colonial rule.
  • People's Republic of China & Republic of China

    The Peoples Republic of China was established in 1949 and broke China up into 4 social classes; the workers, peasents, petite boutgeoisie and the national capitalist.
  • Great Leap Forward

    The great Leap Forward was Mao's attempt to modernize China's entire community. The process had consequences such as poor political beliefs and decisions. It was chaotic and Mao even admitted it as a failure. Propaganda took over.
  • Cultural Revolution

    1966-1976. This was a social political movement that occured in the People's Republic of China. Mao Zedong was the head of the attempted enforcing socialism and attempted to restore capitalism.
  • Deng Xiaoping

    Deng was a Chinese politician and member of the Communist Party of China. He attended the People's Republic of China. He was also an active part of the political rise of China.
  • Tiananmen Square Incident

    A series of demonstrations in Bejing that involved the People's Republic of China.
  • Hong Kong

    Hong Kong is a member of the Special Administrative Regions in the People's Republic of China. It is well known for it's elite skyline and one of the most heavily populated areas in the whole world.
  • Opium Wars

    Two wars that occured between China and Western countries due to British merchants smuggling opium into China to force tea purchasing to be exported to Britain. Gunboats attacked the Chinese coastline and eventually resulted in the Treasty of Nanjing and the Treaty of Bogue. This is important to the modern day because it served as a reminder that the connection and closeness of the countries isn't always easy. In addition, it showed the effect of Treaties and peace attempts China signed.
