Mohandas Gandhi breaks the salt laws and makes his own salt from sea water. -
Long March
This was a race between the communist and nationalist parties in China to drive each other out of the country. The communists won and Mao Zedong became leader of China. -
Opium War
War between the Britsh in China over trade of opium. The British want to be able to sell sell opium to China. They win the war, and gain control of China's trade and the port of Hong Kong. -
Mao Zedong
Mao Zedong becomes leader of China, and the kuomintang (nationalists) are driven to Taiwan. -
Great Leap Forward Begins
Mao Zedong begins the Great Leap Forward to develop industry and agriculture in China. He wanted to modernize the economy, but the movement failed after 2 years. Buildings during the time were built hastily and poorly, and there was lack of food. -

Deng Xiaoping institutes the four modernizations. -
