When the Treaty of Versailles didn't give Germany's colonies back to China, more than 3000 shopkeepers, professionals, and workers went to Tinamin Square to protest it. This demonstrated that the people of China wanted China to become a strong nation that could compete with European nations. China didn't receive the colonies because racism. Japan got them as they industrialized and adopted western ways.
