    In 1850 California becomes a state. California was home to many miners looking to strike it rich. It was one of the first territories to become a state in the western expansion time period.

    The goverment bult forts to protect settlers and miners. in 1851, goverment officials met with indian tribes near Fort Laramie in Wyoming. the officials asked each tribe to stay in a limited area. In return, the goverment gave the indians resources like money,animals,tools,and other things. the treay was later broken by american minors who wanted to mine gold on the indians territory in 1868. the treay being broken caused a massacre and added to the bad relationship between whites and indians

    transcontinental railroad

    In 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed and the union pacicfic railroad and the central pacific were working. The railroad was created after the civil war, during the war railroads helped significantly. For that reason, the goverment funded the transcontinental railroad. This railroad united the eastern and western parts of America. It also helped civilze the west because it on;ly toke a few days to travel out west instead of 6 months and was not nearly as dangerous.

    comstock lode

    Two minors struck gold in the mountains(Sierra Nevada), causing Henry Comstock to go out west and claim the land as his and demand to be their partners. after he was made a partner he bragged about "his" mine. they stroke a lode, and other miners traveled out to where they were to strike it rich as well. so many miners came out it became known as the comstock lode. This period of time caused boowm towns. The period ended in the 1890's.

    cattle kingdom

    the cattle kingdom was short lived but is an important period in history. it included texas longhorn, cowboys,cow towns, and the open range. the cowboy life style came from mexican vaqueros. cowboys hearded cattle to the railroads because there was a high demand for beef after the civil war, especially in the east. the cattle kingdom ended in the 1880's because barbed wire was invented which prevented cowboys from hearding cows up to the railroad.

    John M. Chivington and his troops surprised attack on a Cheyenne camp camped on San Creek. Chivington and his troops attacked and killed most of the indians living there.the troops killed little and big. before the attack indians put up a white flag but chivington ignored it and told his men to kill everyone. this happened as a result of the breaking of the Fort Laramies Treaty.

    Andrew Johnson only served one term as president, he was Lincoln's vice president so after lincoln was killed he became our 17th president. The transcontinental railroad was completed under johnson, which is a major contribution to civilizing the west. The goverment including congress, the president, etc. funded the railroad because they knew it would better the nation. Andrew Johnson deffinately had an impact on western civilization(RAILROAD).

    In 1874 prospecters found gold on lakota territory. Minors traveled to the area to mine gold which angered the indians because americans said they would not bother them in fort laramies treaty if they kept to their territory. In june,1876, General Custer led his troops to the lakota reservation and battled with the indians. all of Custer's men died and Americans lost the battle but won the war.

To get people to move out west the goverment came up with the oklahoma land rush. It was a race to claim a piece of free land out west before someone else. single women, men, and families lined up to claim land. there were a few issues with the oklahoma land rush though. people cheated and some people got trampled.

    Idaho became a state in 1890. Idaho is located next to Washington and Montana. It has an abundance of mountains and scenis views. It also has a little bit of a northern railroad in it and Boise is located in it.

    In South Dakota, american troops and indian were conflicting again. it is known as a massacre, In the end about 300 native americans were dead. It is known as the final clash between the sioux and the federal troops. Although the indians were preparing to surrender , a shoot went off and started the massacre killing 25 soldiers in the process and a lot of natives including women and children.

Bryan was a part of the populist party which formed out west and supported farmers and laborers. when William was elected the west was becoming very populated because of the mining boom, homestead act, and the Oklahoma land rush. otherwise nothing was really happening in the west, except for the populist party being formed and the Grange. Grangers helped farmers set up cooperatives.
