    Congress Pushes to Pass the Preemption Act
    Act to permit purchase of federal lands up to 160 acres. Allowed squatters to be allowed to preemt lands. Leading to encouragement of Westen migration this act had Eastern states against the Preemption act, as they saw a threat to their labor supply. The Act wasnt actully passed in tell 1841. It was just proposed in 1830.

    Known as the father of Texas. Steohen Austin was a lawyer, settler and administrator. The capital, Austin, was named after him becase he brought 300 families from United States to colonize on behalf of Mexican government. Austin aquired 67,000 acres on behalf for the 300 families to settle. Austin was a very well liked man and people praised him.

    MexicanMexican troops under President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna took victory on March 6 1836. Texians looked for revenge after many defenders were killed. They then deafeted Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto. Previously Texians had driven Mexican troops out of Mexican Texas. This was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution history.

This happened after the annexation of Texas to the U.S. Texas wasnt annexed becasue it was considered a slave state. The president of the United States didnt want to include it.

    In order to ualify for a land grant, Sutter became a Mexican citizen of August 29. The following year he recieved 48,827 acres of the Sobrante Land Grant from Governor Alvarado. The land was given to him by the governer becasue the govener hoped it would bring more settlers. Sutter built a fort on this land that was used for a trading post.

He served the shortest time as President in history at a total of 23 days in office before the Pneumonia hit. On his 32nd day he passed. Harrison was the grandfather of Benjamin who was the 23rd president. Harrison also served as a delagate before he served as president.

    Settlers can now stake a claim of 160 acres and after about 14 months of residence to purchase it from the government for cheap before it was offered for public sale. The law was approved on September 4th of 1841. John Tyler was the president at the time. It was designed to grant lands to "squatters" living on federal lands.

    Mexico negotiated after deafeat and fall of the capital. Treaty called for United States to pay 15 million dollars to Mexico. The United States also had to pay 3.5 million for the citizens against mexico. United States gained ownership of lots of land. This land included Rio Grande boundary for Texas, Califonia, and a large are comprising New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and parts of Wyoming and Colorado.

    Texas was incorporated into United States as the 28th state after declaring independence form the Republic of Mexico. Most of the Texas citizens favored this annexation. The democrates and the whigs though didnt like the idea. The biggest concern with everyone was the slaves that were in Texas.

    On June 15 Oregon treaty was signed. It was a treaty between United Kingdom and United States. Brought an end to the Oregon boundary dispute by settling claims to Oregon. Oregon was jointly occupied by Britain and U.S since the Treaty of 1818. The U.S. ended up getting it all later.

    United States gets Oregon by signing the Oregon treaty. Before this Oregon was shared by several countries. This treaty broung an end to the Oregon boundary dispute. The treaty set the boundry at the 49th parallel of north latitude minnesota to the stony mountians.

    The Donner Party Tragedy Only 45 of 89 emingrants of the donner party made it to Califronia from Springfield, Illinios. Spending the winter of 1846 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada, some of the immigrants resorted to cannibalism when they ran out of food. The party tried a new route called Hastings Cutoff, which was more difficult than the other route, leading to the tragedy.

    The Mexican War lasted from 1846 to 1848. Mexico was still pretty mad about the annexation of Texas. This war was driven by the idea of Manifest Destiny. This idea caused a great deal of suffering for the Mexicans. After the last war with Mexico, tension between the United States and mexico grew which led to this war.

    The treaty sets forth traditional territorial claims of the tribes as among themselves. The Indians guaranteed safe passage for settlers on the Oregon Trail in return for promises of an annuity in the amount of fifty thousand dollars for fifty years. In Wyoming 1868, conference was held at Fort Laramie. Resulted in a treaty to bring peace betweens whites and Sioux. They agreed to settle within the Black Hills resevation in the Dakota Territory.
