Chapter 18 Key events

  • The Free Soil Party

    The free soil party was formed by thousands of northerners against slavery. They made it after getting upset with both the democrats and the whigs for not speaking on the topic of slavery.
  • Compromise of 1850

    California was under question on weather it would become a free state or a slave state. Henry Clay had 5 steps to fix this problem. He had the union add Califrnia as a state, had New Mexico decide on slavery through popular sovereignty, fixed a border dispute between new mexico and texas. He also had debt fixed for Texas, end of slave trade , and called for a better working law on fugitive slaves
  • Fugitive slave act

    The fugitve slave act made it a crime to help slaves run away and allowed slaves to be arrested in states were slavery was illeagal. Many people were taken in under this act and scared others. To be compy free people went to Canada.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written about the true cruelty of slavery. It outraged many in the south who claimed this was not how slaves were treated. In the North it masde people have even stronger feelings against slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska act

    This was the division of Louisiana into two different places. It made Kansas and Nebraska. Popular sovereignty decided if slavery would be allowed.
  • Republican party is formed

    A new party was formed by many groups such as the democrats, whigs, abolitionists, and free soilers.
  • The division of Kansas

    Kansas was deepley dived by people for and against slavery. Both sides had weapons to fight with.
  • Violence

    In the same week as sack of lawrence charles sumner made a speech criticizing the pro slavery southerners, specifically Andrew Pickens Butler. A relative to Butler was at the speech and beat Sumner unconcious.
  • Pattawatomie Massacre

    An abolitionist named John Brown wanted to avenge the attack on lawrence. He and his sons moved to Kansas in 1855. He wanted to " fight fire with fire". He and his sons took 5 pro slavery men and killed them. This event started the civil war.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott sued to be free in 1846 saying he became free when he travled with the doctor. The court ruled against him by saying he wasn't a citizen and had no rights. They also said slaves were property. It caused a huge uprise because they also said congress had no right to ban slavery in any federal territory.
  • Lincoln- Douglas Debates

    Lincoln and his oppponet Douglas had many debates across Illinios. They challenged each other on many topics, one of the main arguments over slavery. Douglas attacked Lincoln by saying Lincoln looks at negros as equals. His goal was to shock the whites and it worked. Lincoln lost the election.
  • Harpers Ferry

    Jogn brown was an extreme abolitionist who seized a federal arsenal in Virginia. He and his men made up of himself, his three sons, and 18 other men hoped to free slaves and steal weapons. After 30 hours of firing shots Brown was captured and later sentenced to death.
  • 1860 election

    Lincoln won the race for president in 1860 by appealing to both sides by not spreading slavery, but also keeping it allowed in slaves states.
