    Teacher Exchange
    Thanks to a Lilly endowment grant, 20 teachers were able to gather to research and create lessons surrounding literature discussion and writing strategies. These teachers took their created units to the classrooms of 20 other teachers while they in tern spent 2 solid weeks in intensive training, learning the same strategies. Dr. Jerry Harste, Dr. Carolyn Burke, and Mary Lynn Woods prepared the exchange teachers for their work and in-serviced the "intensive teachers".

    Designing Phase
    With a fire in their bellies, these IPS teachers, with the support of Superintendent Gilbert, began to design a school based upon their action research findings. They wanted to create a school setting that supported all members as learners
    This would be a place where teachers, students of all abilities, parents, university professors, and pre-service teachers could study side-by-side and where everyone’s questions would be valued as part of a collaborative community.
  • Opening Day!

    The Center for Inquiry is born! Taking in 100 students grades K-5, the Center for Inquiry (CFI) opened its doors in one wing IPS school #92. The Principal of school #92, Jesse Lynch, welcomed them whole-heartedly.
  • A New and Permanent Home

    A New and Permanent Home
    With the beginning 6th grade class now 8th graders, support grew for more expansion and a new and permanent home. In 2000, supported by Superintendent Pat Pritchett and the IPS School Board, CFI moved to their permanent home. The new downtown Indy location allowed for 12 homerooms, growing from 150 students to 250! Former CFI teacher, Chris Collier, became the Principal of the Benjamin Harrison IPS School # 2 Center for Inquiry.

    The IB Journey Underway!
    In the summer of 2005, the Center for Inquiry school began the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. CFI became the first school in the state of Indiana to be authorized in the Primary Years programme by the International Baccalaureate Organization.
  • Growth in the IB Programs!

    Growth in the IB Programs!
    Center for Inquiry School #2 received authorization from IB to fully implement the Middle Years Program (MYP) in grades 7-8. This is the first authorized International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme school in the state of Indiana.
    A SECOND Center for Inquiry School, IPS #84, is authorized for the IB Primary Years Program (PYP)
  • CFI School #27 Open!

    CFI School #27 Open!
    The THIRD Center for Inquiry opened for the 2011-2012 school year. The new location, School 27, serves grades K-5 but will add a grade per year, growing to serve 8th grade in the 2014-15 school year. School 27 will begin the process of becoming an authorized PYP school.
