These were American communists who were accused for conspiracy of being spies for the Soviet Union during the cold war. They were convicted and executed on this date. The Berlin wall cut off West Berlin from surrounding Germany, and other parts of Berlin. This was put in place to supposidly protect East Berlin from "Nazi Germans" in West Berlin.

US had tried to overthrow some Cuban government so in fall of 1962, Soviets and Cuban secretly began building missile bases in Cuba, with missiles aimed at the continnental United States. USA blockaded Cuba, and demanded that the bases be dismantled. Entually, the Soviets dimantled them (only because the US secrety agreeed to dismantle THEIR missiles in Italy).
