    Britain, France, and Russia form the the Triple Entente, starting the alliances.
  • Triple Alliance forms in response to Triple Alliance

    The Triple Alliance forms between Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary in response to the Triple Entente
  • Kiaser Wilhelm II becomes ruler of Germany

  • Tsar Nicholas II of Russia is crowned.

    He did not want this and Germany and Russia did not renew their friendship treaty. This lead to some tension between the two parties.
  • Germany and Ottomans Plan Berlin to Baghdad railway

    Germany is making clear attempts at getting ahead in terms of resources. This angers many European nations like France and Britain.
  • Austria-Hungary annexes Bosnia

    This angers the Serbians as well as many other countries in the Balkan peninsula. Russia stands to protect there fellow slavs.
  • Balkan unrest results in Ottoman's losing alot of its land there.

  • Germany Supports Austria-Hungary in its efforts to gain more Balkan territory

  • Bulgaria fails to take land from Serbia and Greece

    They felt they were shorted on the division of the former Ottoman territories and tried to take it by force. Their failure pushes them towards Germany and Austria-Hungary
  • Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand is Assassinated in Bosnia

    Killed by a Serbian Nationalist. Austria-Hungary presents an ultimatum to Serbia backed by Germany.

  • Austria-Hungary Declares war on Serbia

  • Russia Moblizes its Army

  • France Mobilizes its army on the other side of Germany

  • Germany declares war on France

  • Germany Invades Belgium to get to France. Britain Declares War on Germany.

    They warned Germany not to invade Belgium
  • Germany and the Allies sign an Armisitce. The War ends.

  • Treaty of Versailles signed by Germany

    This Treaty would lead to German hatred and unrest. It was one of the driving forces behind Hitler's rise to power.
  • The Treaty of Versailles does not pass in the US Senate.

    This lead to the US not being involved in the League of Nations. Being the Superpower in the world at the time, this was extremely negative for European relations.
  • The Bolsheviks win out the Civil War in Russia and Lenin takes power.

    This lead to the formation of the USSR, an interesting player in the years following WWI. They were not really a power until after WWII.
  • Adolf Hitler is imprisoned for trying to over throw the German government.

    He writes Mein Kampf and begins to become more popular with the German people.
  • Adolf Hitler is named Chancellor of Germany

    This is where he begins to take full control of the country and puts his plans into action.
