  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
The North and South views of slavery were very different. To solve conflicts regarding slavery between the North and the South, the Compromise of 1850 was created. It stated that California would be admitted as a free state, New Mexico and Utah territories would be open to slavery, slave trade would be banned in Washington DC and a strict fugitive law was to be passed. This was a significant cause of the Civil War because it created lots of controversy between the North and South.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Fugitive Slave Law
The Fugitive Slave Law stated that slaves that attemped to escape were to be punished- they were not allowed jury trial and would be captured and retrurned to the South. This benefited the South and people who were pro-slavery very much. This made abolitionists very resolved and determined to fight for what they believe in- no slavery.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriett Beecher Stowe wrote ¨Uncle Tom's Cabin¨ in 1852 to inspire the abolitionist cause. She portrayed slavery as ¨evil¨, which made Southerners very angry, but inspired abolitionists to continue fighting for no slavery. This was an extremely significant cause of the Civil War because it divided the pro-slavey and anti-slavery believers in half and inspired anti-slavery people to continue fighting for what they believe in.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
Dred Scott, a slave, moved to free territory (Missouri), where slaves were not to be worked. However, his owner did work him in the FREE TERRITORY. Dred Scott took this issue to the Supreme Court, where chief justice Roger Taney refused Dred Scott's plea, and stated that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, permitting slavery in all territories. Abraham Lincoln disagreed with this, and this case made the South pleased, but the North disagreed- a cause of the Civil War.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper Ferry

John Brown's Raid on Harper Ferry
John Brown, an abolitionist, attempted to assist and guide slaves in their escape from the South. Brown seized the arsenal and federal armory. However, Robert E. Lee captured Brown and killed many raiders- Brown was sentenced to death and charged with treason. This was a huge blow to abolitionists, but inspired them to keep fighting for their cause.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
The Election of 1860 was between many candidates- who had different opinions on slavery. Douglas & Breckinridge were more pro-slavery, Lincoln was against, and Bell was neutral. Abraham Lincoln won the Election of 1860 and would not allow slavery henceforth. Due to this, conflicts arised (as they usually do!) between the North and the South, leading to a cause of the Civil War.
