    The Missouri Compromise was decided by Congress in 1820. This made it so slavery was allowed in Missouri. On the other hand, slavery was not allowed north of the latitude 36'30'.

    The Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fuguitive Slave Act allowed goverment officers to arrest any person accused of being a runaway slave. The accused person did not have the right for a trial and were deprived of their freedom. This was considered an outrage and many Northerners were convinced that slavery was evil.

    2. Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin is a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stovei, a daughter of an abolitionist minister who met many people who escaped slavery. This book was written about a slave and his owner that beat him. Uncle Tom's Cabin became a best seller in the North and showed Northerners that slavery is morally wrong. In the South, this book was an outrage and considered propaganda.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    The Kansas-Nebraska act made it so people in Kansas could vote whether or not Kansas would be a slave state. 8,000 votes were cast- only 3,000 of which originally lived in Kansas- and it was decided that Kansas would be a slave state. This caused an uproar and violence broke out; John Brown, an antislavery setter, murdered five proslavery men and boys.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was an enslaved person sueing for his freedom. He stated that since he lived in a free state for a long period of time, that he should be a free man. This case went all the way to the Supreme Court, and by the Court, it was decided that Scott was not a free man. This case also resulted in the Court stating that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.

    Harper's Valley
    Harper's Valley is a town in Virgina that made firearms and was raided by John Brown in 1859. John Brown, an anitslavery settler, took the guns and thought that African Americans would join him in a revolt. John Brown ended up wounded and captured; ten of his followers were killed.

    1.Abraham Lincon Elected President
    The election of 1860 resulted in Linicon winning; although he only had fourty percent popular vote, he beated the other canidates: Douglas, Bell, and Breckinride. Lincon won in every free state and Breckinride in all slave states but four. Lincon winning shocked the southern states and many southerners believed that they would no longer have a say in the goverment. The election resulted in the being of the states seceding, starting with South Carolina.
