  • Wilmot Proviso

    The Missouri Compromise didn't apply to large states gained in 1848.Representative David Wilmot from Pennsylvania proposed that congress ban slavery in all territories that will soon become part of the United States from the victory in the american mexico war. the proposal failed though.
  • Free Soil Party

    in the election of 1848 both parties were hoped to win the election without taking a stand on slavery. Antislavey whigs and democrats created a party called the free soil party. the party wanted the new territories to be free states
  • Election of Zacahary taylor

    During the election of 1814 the contreversey over the wilmont proviso led ti the develpement of the Free soil party . Democratics nominated senator brr cass of michigan the whigs nominated zacharytaylor aand the free soil party niminated former democratic president martin Van burean.senator cass decidded thatthe new territories should decide whether they allowslavery or not.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    After gold was found people all over came to the areaThen people had enough people to be admitted as a state.Since most of thecountry was in the north people thoughht that it should be a free state.this angered the south they threatned to secede . the compromise was proposed by senator clay of kentucky . Clay hoped the compromise would end slavery but that wasnt the case, taylor denied the compromise,but he died the was passedby president millard filmore.
  • The Fugitive Acts

    allowed goverment officials to arrest any peson accused of being a runaway slave . suspects had no right to a trial to prove themselves innocent. all theny needed was a white witness to swear that the suspect was a slave holder.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    this book was written by Harriet Stowe .The book was about a runaway slave who was abused by a slave owner called simon legree.the book became a bestseller in the north.
  • Republican Party

    the whigs party split and created a new party called the republican party. their main goal was to stop the spread of slavery in the western territories.their anti slavery stand attracted northerners democrats and free soil members.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Senator Douglas pushed through the act in 1854 which led the nation closer to war . he wanted to see a railroad built from illinois to to the pacific coast. he suggested that creating two new territories nebraska and kansas. both territories were above the compromise line and would become free states. this made the southern states furious . so the issue was solved
    by popular srevenity.
  • Bleebing Kansas

    pro slavery and anti slavery settlers rushed into kansas to try and win the majority vote. Thousands of people came from missouri and entered into kansas to vote illegally. kansas had about 3,000 but about 8,000 people voted for. then after the election people still werent pleased , then violence broke out in kansas.
  • Bloodshed in the Senate

    Charles summer of massachusetts was the leading abolishionist senator. He mae a lot of fiery speeches about proslavery legislature. One of his speeches singled out a elberly senator from south carolina named Andrew Butler. then butler's nephew preston brooks marched into the senate chamber and beat sumner with a cane until he was unconcious.

    john brown was driven out after potttatomie creek massacre and then returned to new england. he began a plot to free people in the south that were enslaved. his goal was to take control over all the guns that the army had. then he thought slaves would rise up and fight but thats not what happened.

    the first candidate for the republican party was john c. Fremont who won 11 out of the 16 presidentjames buchanan wonthe election.
  • Dread Scott v, Stanford Case

    dread scott was a enslaved man who was owned bhy a white surgeon named john emerson. e merson had taken scott to some army bases where slavery was illegal. so after emerson died scott sued irene emerson's wife. the case ended up in the supreme court he was still considered a slavebecause blacks werent citizens.

    lincon and douglas were political and personal rivals. licoln challenged douglas to a number of debates the debates were quite popular.

    the democratic party chose to divide into two parties during the election of 1860 because northern democrats refused to support slavery in the territories. some southerners wanted to fix the relationship between the north and the south so they created the constitutional union party.

    the republicans choose abraham linclon to run for president. northern democrats choose stephen douglas. southern democrates chose vice president john breckenridge of kentucky. also the constitutional union chose john bell of tennesse. Abraham lincoln won.

    the seven states that seceded from the union had a meeting in alabama to form their new nation. they called themselves the confederate states of america

    Lincoln's election made the south feel that they no longer had a voice of there own in the national. they tought the goverment was against there ways of life.
  • Crittenden Compromise

    this was a plan developed by senator john j. crittden of kentucky to compromise with the south. it was presented to congress in late february while the south was forming its new goverment but it didnt pass.
