Causes of the Civil War

  • The Compromise of 1820

    The Compromise of 1820
America attempted to balance the amount of free and slave states by admitting Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. This was done to keep it fair between the Union and the Confederates. The line of separation was drawn at the 36, 30 parallel. The Missouri compromise of 1820 was admitted by Hnery Clay.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
David Proviso attempted to try and outlaw slavery in some parts of the US by trying to pass a law (named after him) that would outlaw slavery in the land gained by the Mexican-American war. Even though Proviso was a racist, he just did not want more dispute in the new found land. The land gained in the war was to be completely free.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
The Compromise was made by Wilmot Proviso, Henry Clay, and Stephan Douglas, in Washington, DC. California was added as a free state to counterepart adding Texas as a slave state. As a part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed to further keep the Southeners content. It succeeded in post-poning hostilities between the two sides.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
When the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in Congress, the North was required to spot and turn in slaves that had escaped the South and crossed the borders into the North. The Northener that saw a slave and did not turn him into the authorities was then arrested her/himself. This outrageously angered the North, due to the fact that they were not racist, but were forced to turn the slaves back to the racists themselves. Large amounts of slaves were escaping which made the South demand their return.
  • Period: to

    Bleeding Kansas

John Brown and the House of Representatives were both included in Bleeding Kansas. As pro & anti-slavery citizens continued to flock to Kansas to try to change of vote for Kansas to allow slavery within it's borders, bloodshed broke out. Congressmen overturned the Compromise of 1820 by allowing Kansas and Nebraska to change their vote on if they have slavery. This claimed 56 lives over-all, and eventually the North and South ratified anti-slavery constituitons by the end of the Civil War.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
Abraham Lincoln passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, because both Kansas and Nebraska were debating on whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. This totally overturned the Missouri Compromise of 1820. So, the Union and the Confederates both flocked to both states to win over the vote for their side. Over this situation, there was plenty of bloodshed in Kansas.Senator Stephan Douglas proposed that the bill was to get support of the South, so a railroad could be built in the North.
  • Dred Scott vs. Sanford

    Dred Scott vs. Sanford
Dred Scott was a slave from Virginia that ended up going all the way to the Supreme Court trying to sue for his freedom. He was denied, and as a slave he was told that he has not actual rights of a human being because he "was a piece of property". This decision by the Supreme Court far from prevented the Civil War.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
Lincoln and Douglas both ran for Senator; the sides were giving their argument about how slavery in states should be decided. Because in the near future, the entire US had to choose to be all pro- or anti-slavery. Lincoln lost, but he made valid points relating to that, like "A house divided cannot stand" which related to the houses and US. When the Freeport Doctrine was passed, it was taken as betrayal to southern democrats, which might've just been his downfall for the presidential election.
