Causes of the Civil War

  • The Missouri Compromise

    This compromise was made to decide where slavery is allowed and not allowed. This was a big debate between the states and the compromise was in effect for about thirty years! until it became less and less effective.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This is a 5 part compromise. California entered as a free state and the area from Mexican Cession divided into Utah and New Mexico.. Slavery was decided by Popular Sovereignty. The slave trade ended in Washington DC and a Strict Fugitive Slave Law. Border problems were settled between New Mexico and Texas.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    This law was part of the compromise. It required citizens to catch runaway slaves. If a person didn't comply with this they could be fined up to $1000 or put in jail for 6 months. Many free blacks were sent back into slavery and the Northerners HATED it because it forced them to be a part of slavery.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    This was a novel written by Harriett Beecher Stowe and was written to show the evils of slavery. This novel changed the way northerners viewed slavery.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Divided land into Kansas and Nebraska territories and decided that slavery would be issued by popular sovereignty. There was violence in the senate and anit-slavery and slavery settled in one area which caused conflict. The Northerners believed this repealed the Missouri Compromise.
  • Pottowatomi Creek Killings

    From all the violence happening in Kansas John Brown and his four sons decided to take the law into their own hands. They rode into a small town and pulled 5 pro-slavery men and killed them all. Even northerners were appaled at what happened.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    He was a slave and lived in a free territory with his owner. His owner moved back into a slave state and while being there he died. Dred Scott filed a lawsuit and lost, the court said he was not a citizen but a piece of property. It was also ruled that Congress could not ban slavery into any of the territories. This repealed the Missuri Compromise, while Southerners LOVED it, Northerners HATED it.
  • Lincoln Douglass- Event

    Lincoln and Douglas debated. Douglas believed in deciding slavery by popular sovereignty. Lincoln believed that slavery should NOT be allowed to spread into the territories. He also believed the Nation wouldn't survive with all the fighting.
  • Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown led 5 blacks and thirteen whites into Harpers Ferry. They planned to raid an arsenal and start a slave revolt. A number of his men died and John Brown was arrested by Robert E. Lee. John Brwon went to trial and was found guilty of murder and treason, he was later hanged. Some Northernrs thought he was a Martyr.
  • Election of 1860

    Lincoln ran against Douglas in the Presidential Election of 1860. The Southerners didn't like Lincoln and his beliefs They overwhelmingly supported Douglas. Lincoln was still elected president. The Southerners were very angry and claimed the North has too much power and many of them talked about seceding the union.
