Causes of the Civil War

    North 3: Protective Tariffs

    The North wanted to protect it's industries because southerners got things cheaper from other countries. In order to protect their industries, they placed tariffs, or taxes on imported goods. This caused anger in the South because they had to pay more than they did before. Then John C. Calhoun came in and proposed the doctrine of nullification. This meant that states had the right to declare a law unconstitutional. This eventually led to the Nullification Crisis.

    South 4: Slavery/States Rights
    As new states kept entering the Union, Congress tried to keep the number of free and slave states equal. They did this to prevent border disputes and war. However States had the power to Nullify, or to declare a Federal Law unconstitutional. This can be found in theTenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

    South 1: Fugitive Slave Law (Act) 1850
    The Fugitive Slave Law was part of the Compromise of 1850. It said that any Man who was suspected of being a slave had to go back with his master without trial by jury or any Bill of Rights. Many Abolitionists became angry because of its unfairness to many men who weren't slaves.

    Sectionalism was used very much in this event. It meant that anyone can r strict the interests of anyone else. On March 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe published a book that would reach 2 million copies in America, Uncle Toms Cabin. Her main goal was to push abolitionists to end slavery. When Lincoln met Stowe, he said, "So this is the little lady who made this big war."

    Dred Scott was a former slave who his master for his long time freedom. This case went all the way to the Supreme Court where 7 of the 9 judges declared slaves or descendants of slaves could not be a U.S. citizen. They also declared the Compromise of 1820 Unconstitutional.

    North 1: John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown and his 5 sons atempted to raid Harpers Ferry, Virginia. What was an attempt turned into a failure as Brown's sons died. He was later sentenced to death by the U.S. He is well known as a matyr, or someone who dies for a cause. Harpers Ferry was known for it's huge supply of armory and weapons.

    Around this time, the Republicans, a new political party, was just newly formed of old politicians, northern Whigs, and northern Democrats. The one thing they all apposite was slavery. The new election was coming up in November and bothe the Democrats and the Republicans just sent there candidates. They were Abraham Lincoln, John C. Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen A. Douglass. The winner for the North was Lincoln and the winner for the South was John C. Breckinridge.

    South 2: The Kansas-Nebraska Act and Bleeding Kansas
    People in the Kansas-Nebraska area disputed on whether it was a free or slave state. So to compromise, they decided to split the territory in two. But there were still disputes. Then out of the blue, 800 military men came and burned the town of Lawrence in Kansas Territory. Then John Brown came, attempting to take over Harpers Ferry. But he only killed five men without Success.
