  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    Proposed by Henry Clay. The compromise was that Missouri would be slave state while Maine would become a free state when entered the union. The southern border of Missouri would be the border of free and slave states. North of the border slavery would be illegal while the south of the border, slavery is legal.
  • Wilmot Proviso(1846-1850)

    Proposed by David Wilmot. The proviso would outlaw slavery in the new territories. For four years he tried to pass the bill. He tried as hard as including the Wilmot Proviso in the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Even proposed in congress. Every atemp he had, always was a failure.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Once again proposed by Henry Clay. His plan was to have California being admidted as a free state. Divide the Mexican Cession into the new territories of Utah and New Mexico. The people of each territorie would decide if their territory would allow slavery.
  • Fugitive Slave Act(1850)

    Passed by congress. It states if a slave is located in the north or ran away from it's owner,that they should come back to their owner. Also states the is the responsibity of the federal government to find slaves,return slaves to their owner ,and trial slaves when returned. Was part of the Compromise of 1850.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)

    In 1854 the territories of Kansas and Nebraska were prepering to become states. But the slavery question came up. Should slavery be allowed in the new states. Stephen Douglas proposed the bill called the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This act would let the people decide if should they allow slavery in their new state. This act would cancel the Missouri compromise of 1820. Would anger people because slavery was illegal according to Missouri compromise in 1820.
  • Bleeding Kansas (1854)

    When the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed,for and against slavery people flocked to Kansas. For five years there would outbreaks between the two groups. In 1856 is when the most violent outbreaks took place. This harsh time sooned became a dark time for Kansas in later years.
  • Dred Scott vs .Sanford(1857)

    Dred Scott was slave who his owner moved to the north, where his owner later died. Then he sue for his freedom. The case went to the Supreme Court. The ruling of the Supreme Court was that slavery was property,slaves could not sue,congress could not ban slavery in the new territories,and they ruled that the Missouri compromise of 1820 unconstitutional.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln and Douglas were running to get a seat in the senate. Douglas would speak to the public first then a couple of days later Lincoln would give a speech of not to thrust Douglas and the issue of slavery. Eventually they would meet at the same town and face each other. Almost all debates where about the issue of slavery. Most debates where held in the state of Illinois.
