    WIlmot Proviso
    Many Northerner's thought that the land gained from Mexico would extend slavery. Representative David Wilmot of Pennsylvainia proposed a bill called the Wilmot Proviso.It said to outlaw slavery in any territory the U.S. might gain from the war with Mexico.

    Compromise of 1850
    The North states were free states and the South were slave states, keeping both sides balanced. When California wanted to become a free state it threw off the balance, so they made the compromise. It said that if states came out of the territories , they would have the choice between becoming a slave or free state.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    This law accused runaway slaves could be held without an arrest warrantand,they had no right t a jury trial. The law enraged Northerners to recapture runaway slaves.It placed penalties on people who would not cooperate with the law.Southern slave catcher were allowed to roam the North and sometimes capture free African Americans.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    It was a novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It presented the cruelty and immorality of slavery and describbed the escape of a slave named Eliza and her baby across the Ohio River. Her book was popular in the North and white Southerners said the book presented a false picture of the South and Slavery.

    Formation of Republican party
    The republican party was a antislavery and sectional party that sought to protect the interest of the North. The Kanasa-Nabraska act tore the Whig Party because southerners supported the act, but northerners opposed the act. There was no room for a compromise so they broke apart. South Whigs joined the Democtatic party, but Northern Whigs joined with other rivals and formed the Republic Party.

    Kansas-Nabraska Act
    Senator Douglas drfted a bill to organize the Nebraska Territory. It proposed to divide the territory into two parts Nabraska and Kansas.To get support for the bill Douglas Sugested that popular sovereignty should be used to decide whether a territory becomes either slave or free. Southerners liked the bill because they could vote for slavery in territorys that had been baned.The Northerner's opposed of it.

    Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri. But at this time Missouri did not allow slavery, so when his owner died he, his wife, and his two daughters argued for their freedom. When their case reached Supreme Court, they ruled against Scott.

    Charles Sumner made a speech against proslavery forces in Kansas. During his speech he insulted A.P. Butler. Preston Brooks was a relative of Butler adn heard about Sumner's speech.He actacked sumner with his cane and beat him unconscious, causing severe injuries.

    Bleeding Kansas, Race to Kansas, and Blood Flows
    --A proslavery mob lotted the town of Lawrence. In response, John Brown led seven other men in a massacre of five of his proslavery neighbors. After his massacre, a civil war broke out in Kansas.
    --Race to Kansas was when supporters and opponents of slavery set off for Kansas. Proslavery people had an advantage, because the slave state of Missouri was right next to Kansas.
    --Blood flow was when people of both sides of slavery illegally voted in Kansas, toward being a slave or free state.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown led 18 men to capture the Hapers Ferry arsenal. Years earlier he killed three proslavery men. He tried to rally up some more locals, but no one came. Instead, the U.S. Marines attacked him and his men. Most were killed and John was sentanced to be hung. Southerners were enraged by Johns actions and northern horrified by his death.

    Election of 1860
    The election of 1860 turned into two races for presidency. Lincon adn Douglas were the only candidates with much support in the North. Breckinridge adn Bell competed in the South.Lincon opposed the expansion of slavery,but Breckinridge insisted that the government should protect slavery. Douglas and Bell were condidered moderates. Lincon defeated Douglas in the North. Becasue of a larger population, Lincon won presidency. White Southerners did not trust him.

    Secession and Trouble with Lincoln
    Southerners warned that if Lincoln won the presidency, southern states would secede. South Carolina became the first state to secede. Then came Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. The Seceded states met in Montgomery, Alabama adn formed teh COnfederate Sates fo America. They named Jefferson Davis president. Northerners thought this was unconstitutional. The Crittenden Compromise was presented to Congress, but defeated in the Senate.
