Fr James Dixon was a Roman Catholic priest, in 1798 he was arrested for suspicion he was part of the Irish rebellion and commanding a company in Tubberneering.

PEEL PARAGRAPH William Davis was born in Tiverton Devon England, he sailed to Sydney in 1800. In 1807 William bought land in Church hill and built a cottage with his wife and son. He used his home to provide people with one of the first non-offical (secret) chapels with Father Jeremiah O’Flynn from 1817-1818. Then later in 1840 William and his wife made the decision to donate their land to turn it into what would be St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church.

PEEL PARAGRAPH The Castle Hill Uprising was on March 4 1804 and was an attempt by a group of Irish convicts to take down British control in NSW and make Irish reign, then planning to return to Ireland so they could keep fighting for an Irish republic. Unfortunately the convicts attempt failed, with over 450 people dead and 260 of them being civilians. Although there were many reasons the Irish had the main ones were discrimination against religions and groups who were not wealthy.

Jeremiah O’Flynn was a preset who helped publicize the importance/needs of the Catholics in NSW. He helped influence the British government in 1820 to allow the first official Roman Catholic missionaries in Australia.

PEEL PARAGRAPH John Joseph Therry was born in Cork Ireland in 1790. He was made a priest in 1815 and was set to work in Dublin, then later moved back to Cork to continue working. In May 1820 Therry sailed and arrived in Sydney. Therry was left as the only priest on the mainland for five years, after Fr Conolly’s leave. John Therry studied and focused on features and ethical life of Catholics. Father Therry was appointed by the first Australian bishop, John Bede Polding to Campbell town 1835.

Fr Phillip Connolly was a catholic priest who arrived with Fr John Therry as the first Catholic chaplains in Sydney. After a year in the colony he traveled to Tasmania and worked across Tasmania until his death.

The first St Mary's was built on land given to the church by Governor Macquarie, who had petitioned by Fr Therry for a Catholic chapel.

PEEL PARAGRAPH With Fr Therry and Fr Connolly arriving in Australia, marking themselves the first and only official priests in Australia. Fr Therry open the first catholic school in Parramatta, while Fr Connolly leaves for Tasmania. In 1822 Fr Therry founds the first catholic school in Parramatta. Later in 1836 Bishop Polding takes dominance over all catholic schools, with 13 primary schools in total.

John Bede Polding was the first Roman bishop Catholic in Australia, 8 years later he became the first archbishop of Sydney. John joined the Benedictine order in 1811 and was ordained priest in 1819.
