On August 21, 1745, Peter III of Russia marries Catherine.

In December of 1761, Elizabeth Petrovna dies and her nephew, Peter, takes control of the throne.

During a coup on June 28, 1762, Catherine takes the control of Russia from Peter. Pictured is the crown made for her coronation.

Later on July 6th of the same year, Peter is forced to renounce the throne and is killed after partaking in a quarrel with a guard.

In 1768, Catherine triggers a war with the Ottomans, her intentions being to expand Russia's territory.

Emilian Pugachev arrives claiming he is Peter III, who has returned to rescue Russia from Catherine ("the German woman") and her control.

On July 10, 1774, the Russians sign a peace with the Turks where Russia gains access to various seas and independence from Ottoman rule, and the Turks are rewarded with the return of their land which had earlier been conquered by the Russians.

Pugachev leads a revolt and seizes power in the city of Kazan. Catherine's troops are off at war but when she sees that Pugachev might attempt to overtake Moscow, she calls her troops home.

Catherine's troops return home and Pugachev is defeated. He is later beheaded in Moscow in January of 1775.

The khanate is threatened with a Russian invasion, and Catherine pressures Bahadur II Gerei to abandon the throne, to which he complies.

In July 1789, a revolution breaks out in France, shocking European monarchies. Catherine is surprised to hear that the ideas she had supported led to this revolt, along with the death of King Louis XVI. Her idea's of enlightened rule and progress are disturbed.

Catherine dies of a stroke on November 6, 1796.
