In 1462 Ivan the Great took the throne. He brought most of northern Russia under his control. He recovered a lot of territory that fell into the hands of Lithuania. He sometimes refered to himself as tsar, which is the russian word for Ceasar. He later died in 1505.

First Russian ruler officially crowned tsar. He intoduced new laws that tied serfs onto their land. In about 1560 he became very unstable, didnt trust anyone, and started throwing violent fits of rage. He killed his own son and organized the oprichniki, which are agents of terror who enforced the tsar's will. He died in 1584 and introduced Russia to a ruler with complete control over everything.
