    Captain Cook first sets foot in Australian soil
    Endeavour left New Zealand and sailed along the east coast of New Holland (Australia), heading north. Cook started to chart the east coast and on 29th April landed for the first time in what Cook called Stingray Bay, later called Botany Bay.
  • America broke away from Britain

    America broke away from Britain
    On the 4 July 1776 America broke away from Britain because America declared independence. Once America had broken away from Britain all the convicts Britain had put in America had to return back to Britain and then Britain had not enough space to hold all the convicts. Then Britain became over populated and sicknesses spread around and poverty became a big problem because there was not enough room for all the people Britain had.

    Britain needed to find somewhere to put their convicts so thy decided to try out Australia ofter Captain Author Phillip said it was good for colonisation. They had 11 ships with an all up total of 1520 free settlers, convicts and marines. Each ship was no larger than a Manly ferry, left Portsmouth in 1787. Although most were British, there were also African, American and French convicts.

    After a voyage of three months the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on 24 January 1788. Here the Aboriginal people, who had lived in isolation for 40,000 years, met the British who were unknown and looked like whit ghosts for the aboriginals.

    On the 26 January 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip put a flag down and made the first colony in Australia called New South Wales. After a long voyage through rough seas they had finally made it to and and claimed part of Australia and started to build a colony.

    Aboriginal Arbanoo was captured by the British to become an interpreter. The reason the British did this was because they did not understand what the aboriginals were saying so they had to get an interpreter.
  • Small pox spread around Australia

    Small pox spread around Australia
    Small pox was brought into Australia from the British and killed around 50 to 70 percent of the aboriginals. The British had no idea that one of the convicts had small pox but then it spreader through out the hulks and then when they came to Australia they had brought that dreadful disease in. A lot of aboriginals that had died where laying in the sand on beaches and in the bush.

    The aboriginal that was captured soon died after small pox was released into Australia because he was not immune to it and had never had or heard of small pox before. He caught small pox and the British knew straight away but they could do nothing about it so poor Arabanoo died a year after he was captured.

    The Second fleet was not as good as the first fleet because the people on the second fleet were mostly sick and did not make it to Australia the ships names for the second fleet were The Guardian, Justinian, The lady Juliana, Neptune, Scarborough and Surpize.

    Captain Author Phillip captured two more Aboriginals to make them interpreters.
    Captain Author Phillip had captured two more Aboriginals after Arabanoo died to make them interpreters. Their names were colebee and Bennelong. Colebee escaped short after he was captured but Bennelong stayed and learnt english and became a close friend of Captain Author Phillip. Bennelong started to wear the white peoples cloths and ate their food. He became a British person.

    The second fleet arrived in Australia but was not as good as the first fleet. The second fleet took longer and many people died on the second fleet. When the second fleet arrived in Australia so many people were so sick they could not even walk. If the convicts were not taken off the ship they would either die or they would just be able to crawl off. They had set up a camp at the docs for the sick convicts and free settlers.

    Captain Author Phillip was speared but he did not die because the spear from the aboriginals was not a killing spear but a pay back spear. He was speared through the shoulder and the spear pierced right through. Captain Author Phillip was speared because he was tying to get Bennelong to come back but he walked to another aboriginal nut the other aboriginal got scared and speared him. When Captain author Phillip was recovering Bennelong came and made sure Captain Author Phillip was alright.

    After Captain Aurthor Phillip was speared Bennelong came back and asked if he could have a proper house and coud live like the British. He lived as a British but then he died from a disease. When he died Captain Author Phillip named a point called Bennelong Point and on that point there is a restaurant called Bennelong.

    He had done some remarkable things through out his life and if it wasn't for his help we could all be french or something else. He was 76 years old when he died. Arthur Phillip died in August 1814, twenty-one years after returning to his homeland. He was buried at St. Nicholas Church, Bathampton.
