  • British Discovery of Australia

    Between 1606 and 1770 more than 50 European​ ​ships made arrival to Australia, which was then occupied solely by Indigenous people. Astronomer and Navigator Captain James Cook claimed the whole of the east coast of Australia for Great Britain

  • Captain Cook Died

    On the 14th of February 1779, Captain James Cook was murdered by natives of Hawaii during his 3rd visit. ​Captain Cook himself was killed by the mob. A few days later, the Englishmen retaliated by firing their cannons and muskets at the shore, killing some 30 Hawaiians

    Before 1901, Australia was not a nation. At that time, the continent consisted of six British colonies which were partly self-governing, but subject to the law-making power of the British Parliament. Each colony had its own government and laws, including its own railway system, postage stamps and tariffs (taxes). This caused a lot of problems and people began to think about the benefits of uniting as one nation, under a federal system of governance
