    Moses Wants to Start a Colony
    In the early 1800s, Mexico decided to give grants to people who wanted to move to their Texas land. Moses Austin decided he wanted to start a colony and received permission to do so from the Spanish governor.
  • Stephen F. Austin Takes Over

    Moses Austin passed away before he could start the colony. His son, Stephen F. Austin decided to carry on his father's plan. He started to advertise the Texas land in newspapers. Mexico appointed Ausitn as the colony's judge and was responsible for governing it as well.
  • Problems with Mexico

    Problems with Mexico
    On this date, the Mexican Constitution of 1824 was signed which made Texas part of the state of Coahuila. Problems started to arise because of the language barrier. Most Texans only spoke English, so they had trounle communicating with the rest of the people living in Mexico. They were also not allowed to practice any religion other than Catholicism.

    Austin Meets with Santa Anna
    Austin decided to go to Mexico to speak to President Santa Anna. He wanted for Texas to be its own republic. He eneded up getting arrested in Saltillo. Texans became angry and started a revolution with Mexico.

    On October 2, 1835, Texas fought against Mexico in the town of Gonzalez and won. Only a week passed before they fought again in Goliad where they also won. President Santa Anna was mad, so he decided to attack Texas once again even though they had lost the first two battles.

    Mexican Troops Attack the Texans
    The Mexican Army attacked the Alamo where all of the Texan soldiers died. Some of the people who fought were James Bowie, David Crockett, and William B. Travis.Santa Anna thought that the revolution was over, so he told Susanna Dickinson, one of the survivors, to tell Sam Houston that Mexico had won. Santa Anna did not know that the revolution was not yet over.
  • Battle of San Jacinto

    Battle of San Jacinto
    It only took the Texans 18 minutes to win the Battle of San Jacinto. Texas gained its independence from Mexico and became the Republic of Texas. Sam Houston became its president. Later, Texas became part of the United States.
