    Machine guns had one of the biggest impacts on WW1 casualties. Machine guns could fire 600 rounds per minutes. They would often overheat, They were mostly effective if sodiers werre running towards the machine guns.

    2 million men volunteer for world war 1. Most men thought it was gonna be a great adventure. Most the men didn't think about the pain they would experience. The name "Doughboy" originated from the men who volunteerd in war.

    June 1914 the archduke was assassinated by a teenage Serbian Nationalist. He was killed during a caridge ride. He was off course from the parade he was supposed to be in. This assasination started the first World War.

    The first major gas attack was on January 31,1915. The gases consisted of musturd gas and tear gas. Only four percent of the deaths in WW1 were from poison gas. The only bad thing was that gas was hard to go up against, which lead to the use of gas masks.

    When poison gas was first introduced soldiers would put urine soaked wrags over their nose and mouth. Old World War 1 gas masks were dipped in,sodium hyposulphite, washing soda, glycerine, and water. All of these chemicals wouldn't absorb poison gas.

    The Battle of Somme was between the British and The Germans. The Britians wanted to weaken German defenses. The odds were against the British because they had 60,000 casualties in one day. Eventually the Britians drove the German Defenses back 40 miles.

    The Mark 1 was the first tank to help on the fields during World War 1. The name Tank was developed to keep the powers of the weapon of mass destruction a secret. It was mainlu made because of its ability to cross through trenches easily and how effective it was in bad weather.

    William James Bean, enlisted in the army and served in the first onlietmant. He enlisted on December 15,1917. William was sent to Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York prior to enlisting.

    He was 29 year olds when he enlisted. His occupation was laying bricks. After William enlisted he would often send letters to his mother ,and his wife. William said that having the oppurtunity to serve his country was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

The Germans also tried to form an alliance with Mexico to go against the United States. The United States Declared War on Germany's ally Austria Hungary on December 17,1917.

    He arrived in France in April of 1918, he was a military policeman. William was apart of the 59th Artillery in France. He was fascinated by the French and their customs. When he was serving in France he would often say France is nice but, New York is better.

    William Served in the Battle of St. Mihiel that occurd from September 12, 1918 through September 15, 1918. It was between the United states and the 110,000 French Troops. The French Troops were under the command of General John J.

    It was a war between the American and French troops which they were fighting for German Positions. This is what started the saying "D-Day" and "H-Hour". There was 7,000 American casualties.

    After William returned he had started getting sick, and his life was being cut short. The doctors had found 3 goiters in Williams kneck. His doctor, which was Dr. Colgrove decided to operate immedietly. The doctor cut right into Williams windpipe which caused his immediate death. After his death William was granted full military honors and buried in Stevens avenue Oakwood cemetery.
