    The Underground Railroad operated at night and moved slaves from station to station. Slaves would either follow the Underground Railroad or travel north on their own trying to find freedom. And Northerners would just try to help free them. This led to the civil war because southerners would get mad that the north was helping and consider them to be "stealing property" from them.     WILMOT PROVISO
    Wilmot introduced a legislation into the house that said "neither slavery or involuntary servitude shall ever exist". That meant that there was to be no slavery in the lands gained by the Mexican-American war. This led to the civil war because it was someone acting out and saying what should be done, and the poeple who disagreed with him would go against him, leading to more disputes.     COMPROMISE OF 1850
    Clays compromise became a law in September. California was offically the 16th free state of US. The south was guarenteed that there would be no federal restrictions on Utah or New Mexico. Slavery was still alive in the National Capital but slave trade was prohibited.     This act required all northerners to return the runaway slaves to their owners in the south. This led to the Civil War because the northerners who had wanted to help the slaves wanted to keep helping but the government was telling them to do different.     KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed each territory to decide if they wanted slavery based on their populations. If Kansas allowed slavery it would violate the Missouri Compromise. Many people wanted to move into these new states and settle but they wouldnt be able to legally claim land there.This caused the civil war because this opened up more disputes between the north and south.     UNCLE TOMS CABIN
    Uncle Toms Cabin Uncle Toms Cabin was a book about the horrors of slavery. The book was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, It grabbed the attention of American readers and only made the north participate more in the freeing slaves acts. It caused the south to deem it as irresponsible distortions and an outrage. This cause the Civil War because the south was mad at the north for helping even more with the slaves.

    It was a document that stated the US should buy Cuba and Spain and if Spain resisted then US should declare war. Expansionist wanted the purchase badly to expand the US terrirtories.     MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR

    The US army had many volunteers join when war broke out against Mexico. The war ended with the Treaty of Guadalope Hidalgo, the US gained territory of California and New Mexico. They paid 15 million to Mexico. It was a grand victory for the US. This led to the Civil War because the US gained more land, that led to disputes against south and north on wheather or not the states should be free or slave states. Mexican American War Information

    CANING OF CHARLES SUMNER
    Charles Sumner was an abolitionist, he gave a speech about the attacks on Kansas and days after he was attacked by Brooks with a gold cane. He got hit with the cane several times over the head. Sumners physical wounds and psychological wounds kept him out of the senate for years.This caused the civil war because the violence from Kansas attacks was leading into the National Legislation.     DRED SCOTT DECISION
    Scott was a slave who had escaped and been living free. He wanted to sue for being kept as a slave and his case finally reached supreme court after 11 years. African-american citizenship and slavery within the territories was at stake. Court ruled that Scott was no longer a free man and africans couldnt be a part of the amerian soverign.     JOHN BROWNS RAID
    John had 18 people go with him to virginia as an army. His plan was to instigate a major slave rebellion in the South. It was said that his plan was doomed from the beginning, but it was successful. Except everyone died. This led to the civil war because the south was mad and said that John Brown was a sympathizer.     Kansas was the battle feilds for the first fight between the north and south. Some people would consider abolitionist John Brown a madman, and other people as a hero. The south wanted slavery to be permitted in all terrirtories and the north wanted slavery to not be extended further into new territories.
