    This was the first time Australia had accepted any refugees. Because of the Holocaust, many Jews were seeking asylum and around 5000 settled in Australia in 1938.

    After World War II ended, Australian attitudes changed. They were scared of invasion and felt vulnerable - they had a fear of foreigners, or xenophobia. Politician Artur Calwell coined the idea of 'populate or perish' - without migrants, Australia would fail.

    British migrants, known as Ten Pound Poms, were first preference of immigrants into Australia. They were offered special treatment and guaranteed a move to Australia for 10 pounds. Over 1 million took this opportunity between 1953-1972.
