An attack on on the British
NSW population is up to 5000 settlers including convicts. Effect: This is a great impact on the Eora (Native People) as the settlers keep expanding and intruding into sacred sites and forests. The seven year war with Pemulwuy and the British continues. Pemulwuy leads the George’s River and Parramatta Indigenous people to an attack on a settlement near Parramatta. Some armed soldiers wound and kill an estimated 100 men they also capture Pemulwuy but he later escapes.

EFFECT - For Attack On The British
Effect: This attack demonstrates that the native people fought to keep their land and they would not just "step aside". The British were cruel in stopping the native people from protecting their land and many died. In the short term, battles between soldiers and aboriginals continued for many years. In the long term, Aboriginal people even today keep fighting for their land rights.
  • Conflicts in the Colony

    Conflicts in the Colony
Due to fears of an Irish uprising, Catholic convicts are forbidden to practice their religion. EFFECT: People were out raged and protested against not being able to continue their faith. Today, Australians are able to practise their own religious beliefs. Pemulwuy is finally captured and killed after 12 years of fighting for his people's land. His head was sent to Sir Joseph Banks in London, by Governor King.

EFFECT For Conflicts in the Colony
EFFECT: The death of Pemulwuy is celebrated by the British but a terrible outcome for the Eora people. However Pemulwuy’s son keeps on fighting for his people in the long term.
  • The Europeans Expand

    The Europeans Expand
There are now 12000 British people in the colony. EFFECT: overcrowding is forcing the colony to expand which effects the Eora people. In search of more land, a group of three men led the first Europeans went inland from Sydney. Although the Indigenous people had lived in these areas for thousands of years. EFFECT: Expansion of settlers impacts on the environment as farming is developed. Again the original inhabitants are forced to leave their lands.

  • New Laws

    New Laws
In 1846 the British Government make a new law about Squatters allowing them to have 14 year leases to their runs. After that the land again belongs to the Government. EFFECT: These new laws are helping the Government control land holders by keeping ownership in the Government's hands. In the longer term, this meant that successful farmers were able to re-lease the land and continue working it. This meant they found better ways to grow food and farm animals in Australia’s harsh climate.
  • The Developing Colony

    The Developing Colony
Free men are allowed to vote but only if they are white, pay rent or own a house. EFFECT: Men are gaining power and having a voice in the making of the Colony. Women and native people are still not heard. Victoria, NSW, SA and Tasmania become self-governing. EFFECT: Britian's influence over the Colony and how it grows is reduced. Australia as a nation and not just a British colony is emerging.
  • Importing Animals

    Importing Animals
Europeans import lots of animals to help make farming easier and introduce animals which they are familiar with. EFFECT: Unfortunately this proves to be a huge environmental mistake. The introduced species scare off native animals, preying on native animals as well as eating their food supply. In the short term, this provided a food source for the colony but has had devasting effects for native animals and still does today. Many species were made extinct.
  • The Importance of Education

    The Importance of Education
In Victoria, a law is made that all children over 6 years of age must attend school. EFFECT: This is the start of people realising the importance of education. It is a big step in Austalia's future along with many changes.
  • Gold Found!

    Gold Found!
The colony is struggling financially and many people lost their jobs and had no money. However the discovery of gold in Western Australia resulted in many people coming from all over the world to try to find gold. EFFECT: Some communities prospered with the discovery of gold and a few people became wealthy but most went home penniless. In the long term this did not solve the financial problems and they continued as the colony tried to find a regular source of making money.
