September 1956 - Australia airs its first television broadcast.
Late 1950s to Early 1960s - Rock'n'Roll music becomes very popular amongst younger Australians.
June 1964 - The Beatles tour Australia.
April 1965 - Australia commits troops to fight in the Vietnam war.
May 1967 - Over 90 per cent of Australians vote in favour of including Indigenous Australians on the census.
1973 - Legal voting age is lowered from 21 to 18.
1975 - The Whitlam government passes the Racial Discrimination Act, effectively ending the White Australia Policy.
1970s and 1980s - Protest music was produced by bands such as Midnight Oil to tackle political issues.
1985 - TV show "Neighbours" first airs.
1997 - Prime minister John Howard refuses to apologies for injustices against Australian Indigenous peoples, after Bringing Them Home report recommends that he do so.
2000 - Sydney hosts the Olympics.
February 2008 - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologises to Australian Indigenous people on behalf of the Federal government.
2013 - Holden announces it will cease Australian manufacturing in 2017.
