    In 1787 the first fleet set sail from England arriving in Australian at Botany Bay on the 26th of January 1788. This date later became known as Australia day. The first immigrants were mostly convicts ,who were been deported from England.

    In 1815 ,a second wave of immigrated from England commenced as free settlers arrived from England and ireland. These settlers took advantage of the governtment's free land grants.Some also became squatters, taking land as there own.

    In 1850's the European, the Chinese and the North American people imigrated to Australian by ship. They came here to join the Gold rush and each of them brought their cultural influence with them and that help to shape the developement of Australia's multicultural society.

    During world war ll there was a little known wave of immigration as German prisoners of war. They arrived by ship for detention in P.O.W camp. After the war ended the Australian Government allowed them to settle in Australia and granted them citizenship. Most of them decided to stay here because Germany was in ruins after the war.

    In 1940s - 1960s there was a wave of European immigrtion. The immigrantes came here by ship. They immigrated here because Australia offered many opintunity for them. The government offered these opintunity because they want to increas the Australian population.
