Captain Cook had been traveling for months to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus. But he was also encouraged to explore the 'unknown southern land' know as Terra Australis incognita. When he saw the country from on the deck, he claimed the east coast of Australia for the Crown. He named it New South Wales.

The war of Independance started, forcing many families to be left poor. This started pick-pocketing and millions of captives became prisoners making the gaols full.

When the gaols all became too full to fit anyone else in a hygenic manner, people remembered the newly discovered land - New South Wales. This is when they began to realise that the land would provide a place to transport convicts.

Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth crossed the Blue Mountains and discovered the unknown land there. They were helped by Aboriginies even if it was daringly dangerous.

Gold was discovered in Victoria on the 15th Febuary 1823 byJames McBrien, at Fish River, between Rydal and Bathurst (in New South Wales).The find was considered unimportant at the time but in 1851, migrants began traveling to Australia and the Gold Rush began. This gave great impact to the Australian multicultural society we are today.

From being British owned, Australia becomes it's own nation. The British Parliament passed legislation allowing the six Australian colonies to govern in their own right as part of the Commonwealth of Australia.
