    On May 13th 1787, eleven ships sent from Great Britian found the huge island of Australia. Although there were already natives living there, this made Australia known, bring up the population and helping shape Australia into what it is today.

    Australia's First Bank is Created
    The first bank in Australia was the Bank of New South Wales in 1817. As small as an event this may seem, it was the first sign that Australia was starting to become wealthy. This was a sign of how good the economy was doing and gave many Australians hope for the future of their country.

    The Australian gold rush brought immigrants from all over the world. In 1854 thousands of imigrants from all over came for gold. Not only immigrants, but many different foods, techniques, languages, and cultures came to Australia. This made Australia a very cultural country.

    In 1889, the Women's Sufrage Society was formed. The major goal of the society was to obtain equal rights between men and women. Finally in 1894, the first woman was allowed to vote in South Australia. This was a huge moment in Australia's, known as a huge change forever. Women began to gain the same rights as men and today Women are shown great respect throughout the country.

    One of Australia's largest industrial disputes in history is known as the Great Strike. Workers throughtout the country began to argue that their pay and conditions were unacceptable. Thousands of people proposed a strike, refusing to work. This was a turning point in Austrilias work force.

    Australia Becomes an Independent Nation
    In 1901, legislation was passed by British Parliment allowing the six Australian colonies to take control in governing themselves. Their government was built and named the Commonwealth of Australia. A consitution was written and Australia began its journey as a strong economic country.

    For the first time ever, on September 3rd, the Australian flag was risen & flown. This day would be forever known as National Flag Day. This was a day where Australians really realized the freedom and culture of their country.

    With over 4 million people living there, Australia quickly became a very large country. With thousands of different cultures, Australia has become home to millions of immigrants from all over. Today Australia's population continues to increse giving it an even larger variety of culture.

    In the year of 1915, Duke Kahanamoku intorduced surfing to Australia. Not only has surfing become a huge part of the culture there, but is one of Australians favorite past times. Also attracting millions of tourists to the beaches of Australia, surfing has in a way helped the economy.

    Rememberence day is the day every year where Australians thank their veterans for their bravery and sacrfice in WWI. The first rememberence day being November 11th started the tradition and it is now held on that day every year. This day is a day for Australians to look back and be thankful for their histiory.
