  • 1770

    In 1770 captain James Cook landed at botany bay on his ship then he kept to eastern coast of Australia claiming it for Great Britain.
  • 1788

    In the 1788 The first British settlement was established in Sydney by Captain Arthur Phillip. It was the start of the British penal colony which is made up of mostly prisoners.
  • 1803

    In the 1803 Australia was proven to be an island when English navigator Matthew Flinders completes the sail around the island.
  • 1808

    In the 1808 The Rum Rebellion occurs and the current governor, William Bligh, was arrested and removed from his office.
  • 1824

    In the 1824 The name of the island was changed from New Holland to Australia.
  • 1829

    In the 1829 The settlement of Perth was founded on the southwest coast. England lays claim to the entire continent of Australia.
