    1780's
    On the 20th of April Captain Philp (on the Endevour) makes the first eropean sighting of the coast of Australia. This changed the way people in England thought about the rest of the world This is important because the English (and the world for that matter) knew nothing at all about their saroundings and what was going on in the rest of the world. This was one of the first things that led to peoples curiosity. Although people think it, Captain Cook didn't discovered or name Australia.

    Arthur Phillip admiral and governor, was born on 11 October 1738 in the parish of Allhallows, ward of Bread Street, London, the second child of Jacob Phillip,(Philips dad) a language teacher who came to London from Frankfurt, and maried Elizabeth, née Breach. It was possibly the influence of his mother that determined his future career his mother was not so much medaling but more caring that her son started a good career and life. this is another impotrant factor, even though at the time maybe

    Robert Sideway, an ex-convict opened the first thearter in the colony. This changed Australia's entertainment now and also amused people who could afford to see it when it was first built (some people couldn't afford tickets to the thearter) Many who wathched were free settlers and enjoyed the thearter very much. Now it is even more popular and many more have opened all over Australia including some quite famous places that put on many exciting plays and performances.

    A second mojor settelment is established in Van Diemen's land. This expanded the settelment and also expanded peopeles understanding of Australia and the world, chainging all of the English maps. The colonies are growing and are expanding rapidly throgh Australia making more room for convicts but also free English men and women who have got sick of England and disided to seek their wealth in Australia.

    Lauchlan Macquarie a Governor arrives in NSW to riempose British Governoment control over crime. The NSW Corps is disbanded Macquarie established the first proper colonial police force. This helped keep convicts in line then and it is still happaning now there are also more police now than back then so there is less crime and more order in the Australia and the world in general.

    The colonial census shows a white population in NSW of nearly 40,000 this started the census in Australia and was proved to be a great way for important people to know how many there were in that particular country or area. This helped Captain Cook realise he needed more houses for the ever growing number of convicts ariving in Australia.
  • 1830's

    1830's
    Governor Bourke of NSW introduces annual sqatting license fees to regulate land use, and to try to stop squtters from killing Aboriginals. This increased the number of Aboriginals that were kept alive and this also gave Captain Cook more money to get supplies over from England for example tools, food, livestock and also guards and people to keep the convicts in line and in order. He also needed more builder to bulid the houses needed for the convicts, guards and free settlers.

    Transportation to Vans Dieman's land is stopped for two years because there are already too many convicts in the colony and Captain Cook disided he didn't want any more people this is a dramatic change for people who could afford to catch transport leaving many people unhappy.

    The Eureka Stockade starts! this is terrible and effects Australia to a huge extent. Hundreds of thousands of men ad women are killed in the rebellion

    1860's
    The first long distance raliway is opened in the colony the railway goes from Melbourne to Bendigo to Echuca which on the Murry River Boarder. this started the railway line in Australia and helped people who could afford it around Australia.

    In Victoria a free compulsory education law is passed: All children six years old and over must go to a school. This started education in the colonies and would help the children when the got older get a good job that gave them a lot of money. This law is still used in Australia but with a few minor ultarations

    Aboriginal boards of protection are given the power to force Aboriginals to leave reserves. Indiginous families are separated by horrible governoment intervation. These Aboriginals are heart broken by these terrible new rules, separating families tribes and friends.
  • 1890's - 1901

    1890's - 1901
    In South Australia women are finally given the right to vote. This is an amazing result and changed the way women were treated in the colonies. Even now women are allowed to vote because of what happned in 1894 this is also amazing because Australia was one of the first countries that let women vote women are also granted many other rights around this time.
