    Thomas Jefferson wanted to make the country bigger. Spain gave New Orleans back to France. Jefferson feared that French settlements would stop colonists from moving west. He sent people to ask Bonaparte to sell New Orleans and western Florida. France was going to war wit Britain and neede money. The deal was made final on Apr. 30.

    When Thomas Jefferson was the president, he knew little about Lousiana, yet he wanted to know more. He picked his friend Meriwether Lewis who icked his friend William Clark to go on an expedition, to learn more about Lousiana.

    Mexico won its freedom from Spain. They invaded land in present day Texas. Many Americans moved there as settlers. Mexico's government got scared that to many Americans would move in and raised taxes, hoping to stop settlers from moving in. This angered the Americans and war broke out.

    This was a war between Americans and Mexicans. During this battle a group of Texans and their supporters turned the Alamo. Sanat Anna and his army attacked on February 13 1836. The Alamo held off the Mexicans for 13 days. On March 6 the Mexicans won.

    Texans didn't give up after "The Battle of Alamo". They attacked the Mexicans again on April 21 shouting "remeber the Alamo". The captured General Santa Anna . For his freedom, General Santa Anna granted Texas their independence.

    The Cherokee started their long journey west to Oklahoma because of the Indian Removal Act. They had to walk 800 miles. Soldiers surrounded them making escape difficult.

    Both America and Britain claimed Oregon County. Americans wanted to see their land grow even if it meant going to war agian. At first it looked like another war, but both countries met to sign a treaty in 1846. This set America's modern borders. Two years later Oregon County was known as Oregon Territory.

    In 1848, James Marshall and some other workers, were building a sawmill for John Sutter when they discovered a nugget of gold. Later on they discovered more gold. The gold discovery caused many settlers to move to California in 1849.
