Chinese Civil War
China was in a civil war over the idea of Comunism. China split into the Kuomintang (KMT or Chinese Nationalist Party) and the Chinese Communist Party (CPC). They were both lead by very strong leaders and the fear that America had of communism made it get involved several years later during the Cold War. In America comunism is bad becasue we like to be democratic in giving people a say and a vote on desicions. -
Mao Zedong forms the People's Republic of China
Mao became a founder member of the Chinses Communsit Party. His party along with the Kuomintang's Party fought together to defeat those that controlled the Northern part of China. Later after the Civil War these two parties had distinct ideas about communism, but thanks to Mao he won and founded the People's Republic of China. -
Chiang Kai-shek moved to Formosa after defeat
Chiang Kai-Shek China's leader of the Nationalist Party(Kuomintang party) moved to Formosa, Taiwan after the Communist defeat in China. When he moved to Taiwan, it was Taiwan who held China's seat in the United Nations. -
Chinese Civil War Ends
With the end of the Civil War Communism takes over. China, one of the biggest countries, falls. The United States is concerned that if China became communist then the Unites States might become communist too. This scares Americans and casuses change in everyones lives. -
Korean War Begins
Although the war officially started on June 25,1950 the Korean War had been developing after WWII; when it was divided into the 38th Parallel. The war officially started when North Korea, who was being supplied by the Soviet Union and China, attacked South Korea. Immediately after South Korea was helped by the United States and other naitons from the UN. -
Korean War Ends
The war ends with the signing of the armistice.During the war the US was helping Southern Korea while China and the Soviet Union helpd the Northern part. The armistice reinforced the 38th parallel border and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The Zone is a buffer zone between the two nations. -
Sino-Soviet Split
The Soviet's and China's ideology politcally started to differ, do to their intrest for their countries. China had decided to declare its Communism was more superior to that of the Soviet's. This would help open ties with the US. -
Soviets Invade Afghanistan
The USSR helped the Afghanistan government keep control after a rebelion occurs. The United States along with its allies helped the Gurrila fighting Afghan Mujahideen to try and overthrow its government. This would go on to last 9years. -
Olympics are boycotted
The Olympics were a large event that took place every 4 years and in 1980s it was a vote for either Moscow, Soviet Union or Los Angeles, United States. Moscow was chosen and large countires decided to boycott the games. The United States wanted to boycott because of the USSR's invasion in Afghanistan.
