Byzantine - The mosaic of Emperor Justinian and his retinue by Meister von San Vitale in Ravenna.

Byzantine - The mosaic of Emperor Justinian and his retinue by Meister von San Vitale in Ravenna.
Normally, Byzantine art focuses mainly on two themes, religious and imperial. This painting shows the imperial theme as it focuses on the emperor in the middle of the painting. Byzantine art style uses gold especially on the background, as the image shows the same. It also has little representations of emotions.
I chose this painting out of all the others because it has many details. Many figures are shown in it and different colors are used.Has detailed borders with different styles and colors

Renaissance - Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

Renaissance - Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci
The renaissance artists wanted the viewers to feel the emotions in their paintings. They wanted the objects in their paintings, especially people, to be more realistic (just like the Mona Lisa). It displayed real emotions and looked solid.
I chose this painting because it would be a good example of Renaissance art as it is famous. Another reason is because it is more realistic. Although the artist wanted to focus on the lady, the background also had a part in the painting.
  • Baroque - La Fruttivendola by Vincenzo Campi

Baroque - La Fruttivendola by Vincenzo Campi
This style of painting shows motion and uses interpreted details to produce drama, literature, and tension. In the painting shown, the lady’s hand shows motion. Baroque art has the characteristics of naturalism and realism. These are used to show the normal daily life of the people being painted. It uses strong contrast of light and shadow.
What attracted me to it is the usage of rule of thirds. The lady is in the left of the painting, surrounded by fruits, that are colorful and detailed.
  • Romantic - Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich

Romantic - Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich
What mostly describes romantic art is nature, supernatural, picturesque, and nationalism, It means having a deep, spiritual relationship with nature, and how to fit in with it. Romantic art is often calm and classical, showing itself as landscape.
What I liked is the focus on the man with his back to the viewer, while others are blurred by the fog that is connected with the sky.
  • Realist - The End of the Working Day by Jules Breton

Realist - The End of the Working Day by Jules Breton
It is the attempt to represent subject matter truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding artistic conventions, implausible, exotic and supernatural elements. As the picture shows a natural event in a natural place. It is a term to describe the very precise, detailed and accurate representation in art of the visual appearance of scenes and objects.
What attracted me to this painting is the sunshine in the middle which made the plants glow.
  • Post impressionist - Montmartre, de la rue Cortot, vue vers saint-denis by Maximilien Luce

Post impressionist - Montmartre, de la rue Cortot, vue vers saint-denis by Maximilien Luce
Post impressionist is the devlopment of millions of colored dots that create Pointillism. when looked from a distance, the painting does not seem to have dots in it, infact, it looks clear. It is is identified by vibrant colors, thick paint application, real life subject matter, geometric shapes, and distortion of objects or figures for expressive effect.
I liked the idea of "selective focus" on the house and the trees around it. I also liked the blending of the colors throughout the painting.
  • Surrealist - Arrival of the flower ship by Vladimir Kush

Surrealist - Arrival of the flower ship by Vladimir Kush
Surrealism shows the exploration of the dream and unconsciousness as a valid form of reality. It is beyond reality as the painting shows petals used as small ships by the figures on the sea, and large flowers on top of the white ship. Surrealist art emphasis on the mysterious, marvelous, mythological and irrational in an effort to make art ambiguous and strange.
I chose this painting because i liked the way the clouds are painted and the idea of giant pink flowers. I also like the colorful sea.
  • Contemporary Abstract - Raindrops 4 by Bruce Gray

Contemporary Abstract - Raindrops 4 by Bruce Gray
Abstract art usually involves colors, lines and visual language of form to develop a piece of art. The color scheme used in the painting shown is Complementary. It has a geometric shape. What makes it abstract is the departure of reality in depiction of imaginary art.
I chose this painting because of its circular/triangular shapes with clear colors used which makes it colorful. I liked the distrubutions of colors throughout the canvas.
