    Italian Renaissance

    Italian Renaissance
    The Divine Comedy was important during this time. It was written in 1308 to 1321 by Dante. It has three parts; Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. The poem is about Dante's trip from the darkness to the light. He meets Lucifer in the Purgatorio section and goes to heaven in the Paradiso section. Many artists were inspired by this poem. Some did works about the whole poem while others did specific sections. They wanted to show not just the heavens but what people thought hell looked like.

    Italian Renaissance
    The artist Sandro Botticelli was born as Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi. He started in Fra Filippo Lippi's studio painting frescoes and worked with the engraver Antonio del Pollaiuolo. He then had a workshop of his own in 1470. He joined Lippi's son for the Compagnia di san Luca. Then going back to Florence he started to paint his more popular subjects of mythology. At the end of his career his works became less popular. He became depressed.

    Northern Renaissance
    On Albrecht Durer was born on May 21, 1471 in Nurnberg, Germany. His hometown was popular for German artists. He began with painting portraits. He moved to Italy in 1494. He was inspired by the Italian arts. He liked natural sciences and mathematics. He died on April 6, 1528 in the place he was born. He was buried in the Johanniskirchhof churchyard.

    Italian Renaissance
    The Abyss of Hell 1480s by Sandro Botticelli was inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. He based this work on the Inferno part of Dante's work. In this work each part is sectioned of to represent different types of people in the Inferno. During the Italian Renaissance people were focused on the good and bad in people. Artists showed representations of what goodness and evil can look like in a person's mind.

    Albrecht Durer’s The Seven Angels with Trumpets shows angels on trumpets below God. He looks to be on his thrown. This work is in the form of a woodcut. After Luther's 95 Theses were posted artists wanted to bring things back to the religious view.

    Northern Renaissance
    Martin Luther’s 95 Theses was written in 1517. Luther thought that the teachings of the church were wrong and that someone needed to set it right. He also thought that sale of indulgences or paying to remove sins was wrong. He posted the theses of the door of the church for everyone to see. Everyone saw it and reacted to it. Some followed what he thought and others didn’t. This helped to from the Reformation.

    Nicolas Poussin was born in Normandy during the year of 1594 and got education in Rouen. He started out painting easels for private customers. He studied some ruins during his career. He worked for people in Rome and Paris. Works made for Louis XIII were not as popular as his other works. Towards the end of his career he began to do religious works.

    Nicolas Poussin’s The Adoration of the Shepherds was made during the Baroque period in 1634. This work shows the shepherds that have come to see the baby Jesus. Crowding around to see the sacred child. At the top we see cherubs flying over the shepherds. This was type of scene was common during the Baroque time. The church wanted people to reconnect faith with them. By having the scene of Jesus being born, the child that was to bring faith to the world, shows how this was done by artists.

    The Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture was founded in 1648. It was created off the need to train artists on classic styles. To get in artists had to submit pieces that had to be accepted. Poussin was one of the artists that made the academy inspired.

    At the end of a boy’s education they went on a trip to see some of the greats art in the world. This trip was called the Grand Tour. People thought this would help the men to be better rounded and give them respect for such things of beauty. It was common for ruin of buildings to be a focus of the men’s trip. They wanted it to show the beauty of what was there before it was taken down and that the Roman Empire had fallen.

    Enlightenment and Revolution
    Hubert Robert was born on May 22, 1733. He had an education in Paris. He went to Italy and this is where he discovered his fascination with ruins. He made friends with other artists including Giovanni Piranesi and Giovanni Panini. In 1765 he came back to Paris and began to show his work at the Paris Salon. He showed ruins, architecture, and landscapes. He continued working and put in prison during the French Revolution.

    In 1789, Hubert Robert’s The Ruin was published. This work shows the remains of a huge building. It looks like there are people in helmets at the bottom of the work near a statue. The men look to be moving the statue and other ruins of the building. This was common during this time period where when artists had finished their education they would go on a trip to few different types of art. Robert was very fascinated with ruins of important buildings

    Romantism and Realism
    Joseph Paxton was born on August 3, 1803. He started showing signs of artistry through gardens. He got a job at Chatsworth and created gardens with fountain, villages, and arboretums in them. He also built the Great Conservatory. In 1852 he showcased his work Crystal Palace at the Great Exhibition. It was where people from all nations brought different types of artwork. The palace was the venue for the entire exhibition. This was a huge success for him. He then started to create public parks.

    The Industrial Revolution was during 1820 to 1870. This is when more products were made in factories instead of by hand. This meant products could be made faster and in higher amount. It also meant that more money could be made for the company making the product because more people could buy them, but it meant that the people that originally made the products by hand would be out of a job. For artists during this time it meant that they could use new technology to make their works.

    The Mentmore Towers were created by Joseph Paxton for baron Meyer Amschel de Rothchild in 1854. Rothchild wanted themto show his power and wealth. It was home to many guests. It was also sold many times. It was bought by Maharishi Yogi for the use of a university. This type of building was popular during this time when artists were starting to use new technology to build giant works. The towers where also used in several movies.

    Charles Robert Ashbee was born in Isleworth, England on May 17, 1863. He was an architect and designer. He went to college at Wellington College and King’s College. The School of Handicraft and School of Arts and Crafts were created by him. He wrote a preface for one of Frank Lloyd’s works. The guild closed and Charles started architecture. He then went to Cairo University to teach. He died on May 23, 1942 in Godden Green.

    The Arts and Crafts Movement started in 1880. It started first in England and then to the United States. The movement came out of the need to stray away from the industrial way. It was created to show case the skills of the single artist and not the high production of a machine. People wanted to know that things were personalized and not mass produced. There needed to be a connection between the artist and the person that receives the work.

    Porringer by Charles Robert Ashbee was created in 1902 to 1904. It is made of silver and chrysoprase. A spoon is included with the two-handed saucer. This work was created after Charles started the Guild of Handicraft in 1888. The guild made furniture, metalwork, leatherwork, and jewelry. This work is relevant to the time period it is from through the need for works to be handcrafted and special. During this time the Arts and Crafts Movement was happening.
