Jamestown was the very first permanent English settlement in what would someday be the U.S. and with this land there was a chance for people to come here from England and escape the persecution of their old leaders and claim free land if they could survive. This was the very start of our nation where we were able to get a few people who survived to live out the rest of their lives and teach their kids how to cooperate with each other and make the best of what they had.
-
Once tobacco was discovered it was the first major cash crop of the colonies. This would introduce more trade throughout the region and once slaves were introduced you could use this as money to buy them and other things. It was something that English settlers discovered being used by the native Americans that they would regularly get into conflicts with. It wasn't a need but was for more recreational use among the settlers whereas the Indians would use it more for rituals and traditions.
-
The population of Jamestown had grown to be around 700 people by this time and slaves were just now introduced. Slavery wasn't a huge thing at this time like it would be in a century but this was the time were the ideals began to be spread of white supremacy. It took years for generations of dehumanizing black people for it to get to a point of the harsh treatment slaves had a century later.
-
When the pilgrims left for the new land in modern day U.S. they were moving in search of religious freedom rather than the settlers of Jamestown moving here so that England would be strengthened by expanding their territory further. The pilgrims created the Mayflower Compact which was the very first form of self government in this new land. The Mayflower Compact was put into place because without some kind of structure it would be chaos. They settled down in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
-
Roger Williams saw that although the Separatist Pilgrims claimed to have escaped for complete religious freedom that it wasn't necessarily the case. If you didn't conform to the exact religious practices as everyone else in the new colony then you could get in huge trouble. He advocated for a separation of church and state so he was thrown out and banished. He would go on to make a new colony with true religious freedom and that would separate the church's power and the state's.
-
Anne Hutchinson got in trouble because women weren't supposed to do many things other than feed the kids and take care of them. This was the first spark of a women trying to do something equal to a man. She was banished for teaching woman religion which they didn't need to learn or teach, at least those were the views of that time. She would go to Rhode Island and would be treated better than she had been in Salem. Rhode Island allowed her to preach and gave her more religious freedom.
-
The Puritans wanted their people to be well educated so they established public school with in the colonies. This would be the first form of public school in the colonies. At a later date kids would even be required to be able to read in order to ensure they would be able to rea scripture. This helped them get ahead in life and not be behind the British standards in England.
-
The Navigation Acts were put into place by the British to prevent the English settlers from becoming too independent on their own. The acts limited all trade from importing and exporting goods to where Great Britain was the primary area. Only very rare occasions were the English settlers allowed to trade with outside countries. They were only allowed to sell tobacco and sugar crops to the British and this upset the settlers and made a wedge between the colonies and Great Britain.
-
Religious tolerance was still something that would take a long time to develop so more and more people came to the colonies to start over and be free. William Penn was persecuted for his Quaker faith so he decided he would create a colony of his own that was open to all kinds of religions. He was open to men and woman worshipping together freely. His ideas were consider radical at the time because everywhere else you had to follow the religion of the area or else you would get in trouble.
-
This time was very confusing and people still don't know why this mass conspiracy was even a thing. In 1692 in the town of Salem a group of people were hanged for being witches despite having no real proof and just going off the word of the townspeople. Looking back on this atrocity it motivated us to make sure nothing like this would happen again. The Great Awakening was beginning to start so new ideas helped move past focusing on rumors.
-
Thomas Savery built the steam engine in 1698. It was a device that originally was used to pump water out of flooded mines. This invention would be very crucial to the future of the country. Cars would be powered by their engines. -
This was a 7 year conflict between France and Great Britain. The taxes put onto the colonies during this time put strain on them. This war wasn't really seen as our own. British used their power of the colonies to fund the expensive war off the lives of the colonies. This weakened the bond between the British and the English settlers pushing them closer into a Revolution.
-
The Proclamation of 1763 was the British's way of limiting the colonies progress westward. After the French and Indian War the colonists gained lot of land west of where they were already settle. Great Britain saw that the colonists were becoming more independent and if they expanded westward they would lose their hold on the region. The Proclamation stated that we could not go west of the Appalachians which greatly upset the people of the time beings they lived pretty much without British rule.
-
The Townshend Acts of 1763 were seen as very unfair to the colonists because beings they didn't have any representation into parliament they had no way of saying no to the many taxes being put onto them. The taxes that were included in the Townshend Acts were those over glass, lead, paper, tea, and other imports across the colonies. The people in Great Britain didn't even have to pay for these taxes that were exclusively for the English settlers.
-
The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War started on 1754 and ended on 1753. The result of all the fighting was France giving over any land they had in North America to British control. The settlers were outraged they wouldn't get the new lands and were paying taxes for a war they weren't even really a part of.
-
The Tea Act made tea something that was taxable which was upsetting because it was something that was used everyday. Taxes on tea had already existed so it was just a way of Great Britain to blead the colonists dry and take all they had. -
The Boston Massacre was the result of the end of the French and Indian wars gain in land. Great Britain sent soldiers to keep the colonists "safe." A fight broke out and 5 men died in Boston at the hands of the British angering the settlers.
-
The English settlers were so upset with the Tea Act that they wanted to send a huge message to the people in charge back in Great Britain. They dressed up as Native American Indians on December 16th,1773 and dumped around eighteen and a half million tea bags into Pearl Harbor which would be around present day one million united states dollars which sent a clear message to the British leaders.
-
The First Continental Congress was the gathering of all the prominent leaders of the 13 colonies who were planning to rebel against British rule during the start of this revolution. Their first goal was to start boycotting all British goods unless they would be able to get rid of the awful Intolerable Acts Great Britain put into place as punishment for the Boston Tea Party.
-
The Intolerable Acts were the response of the British government to the Boston Tea party were the settlers dumped tea into the harbor. The Intolerable Acts closed Pearl Harbor and placed British officials in a place of power where if they did something unlawful they would be tried back in Great Britain making the system very far in favor of them because many colonists livelihoods was growing their own crops to survive and wouldn't be able to make the journey to plead their side if the story.
-
After the battles at Lexington and Concord the second Continental Congress met up to discuss further in action in what to do with this ensuing war. -
The Battle of Bunker Hill was a clear sign that the thirteen colonies and Great Britain would not make amends and that there would have to be bloodshed. The Continental Army was defeated by the British but the thirteen colonies were able to take out enough British soldiers that it showed we had a fighting chance to win this war if we stuck to what we were doing.
-

-
The Revolutionary War came to an end when the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783. This Treaty of Paris recognized and acknowledged the Unites States of America as an independent nation from Great Britain. The land east of the Mississippi River, which was south of the thirteen colonies, was given to the United States of America at the closing of the war. This helped the U.S. increase both their industry and farmland to amounts that wouldn't just be for surviving off of but for selling elsewhere.
-
While the construction of our country was underway we had to figure out our new government. Voting for Present and government office would need Representatives for each state based on its population. Higher population meant you had more influence on who won each vote. The 3/5th Compromise stated that slaves would account for 3/5 of a white person. This was controversial because the South wanted their slave population to count as people but not have the same rights as the white citizens.

With the bank it helped slowly diminish the debt.
-
Eli Whitney was an American inventor who made the cotton gin. In the South the main source of money was growing crops and with this device it made it way easier to separate the seeds from the cotton. The election of 1800 was a big moment of the United States because it was the first time that power switched between the two political parties. Thomas Jefferson was the very first Democratic-Republican to serve in office. Jefferson wanted to follow the constitution as much as possible and had strict views of it.
-
The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of the land west of the Mississippi River. It was purchased by President Jefferson for around fifteen million united states dollars. This was hard for him to do because as a strict constructionist he believed you should only read what the constitution says and nothing is implied. He didn't technically have the power to buy the land but claimed it because it double the size of the united states.
-
After President Jefferson purchased Louisiana from Napoleon he sent Lewis and Clark to go and survey the land. They would discover that people already inhabited the land but that would all go down hill because the westward expansion of the United States would force the Native Americans to move from their homes. They also documented new animals and plants and told people of all the wonderful new things they found. This lead people to want to move west because this was an opportunity for the U.S.

Great Britain and France were at war and both sides didn't want the other to be doing trade with the United States. The United States of America was sick of the bickering between the two and thinking one could dictate if the U.S. would trade over the other so the solution was the Embargo Act. It stopped all formal trade between the U.S. and Britain and between France and the U.S. This backfired on our economy because without trade it did more harm to us than to them.
-
Great Britain had kept limiting American's ability to trade with other countries blockading them with their navy that in response the United States decided to decide to declare war on Britain.
