Thousands of Americans were drawn to Texas for its rich soil and in 1846 an American Intermediate led a revolt to establish Texas as an independent nation- and even though Mexico crushed the revolt and passed new laws, Americans kept coming in, soon enough the American Texans hoped for annexation by the US and the first president of Texas sent a delegate to Washington DC with an offer to Join the union.

On Jan 3th, 1846 Polk ordered Taylors army that was stationed in Texas to move across the Nueces river to the Rio Grande, for months Mexicans refused to fight but finally some Mexican troops crossed the Rio Grande and attacked a unit of American soldiers, war was declared on May 13th, 1846.

Wilmot introduced an amendment to the appropriation that prohibited slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico, this passed the House failed in the Senate. Southerners said that all Americans had equal rights in the territory.

In Jan 1848 James Marshall, found traces of gold in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Stutter tried to suppress the news worrying that his own substantial empire would be destroyed but by May it had reached San Francisco, and by summer it had reached the east coast and much of the rest of the world, California's non Native American pop grew from 14000 in 1848 to 220,000 in 1852.

Created to settle outstanding slavery issues- the north and south were in disagreement over slavery and laws within slavery, and the union was on thin ice. Moderates and Unionists spent the winter of 1849-1850 trying to great a compromise. Henry Clay, who spearheaded the effort believed that no compromise could last until it settled the issued in dispute between he sections, the decisions made caused a 7 month long debate.

Strengthened under the compromise of 1850, this Act required that any fugitive slaves to be returned to their owners even if they were in free state, the north opposed it, while southerners were happy with the act. Northern States began passing their own laws barring the deportation of fugitive slaves. Mobs formed to prevent the enforcement of the law. Soon this Act became meaningless.

Stephan Douglas introduced new territory known as Nebraska, his goal was to increase white settlement in the area. Said that Nebraska would be a state that's legislature could choose whether or not to allow slavery, Douglas divided the area into two territories- Nebraska and Kansas. Pro slavery forces elected a majority which legalized slavery, this outraged free states and they created a constitution. Caused fights between the two.

Franklin Pierce had been pursuing unsuccessful diplomatic attempts to buy Cuba from spain. In 1854 however, a group of his envoys sent him a private document from Onstend, Belgium making the case of seizing Cuba by force- this document ended up getting leaked to the public. Anti slavery Northerners were enraged, and southerners opposed to acquire any new territories that would not support a slave system.

Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri, his owner took him to Illinois and Wisconsin where slavery was forbidden, in 1846 his owner died and Scott sued the owners widow for freedom based on his residence in free territory. The Missouri circuit court said he was free however the owner's widow's brother had claimed ownership of Scott on the basis that he was not a citizen but private property and he had no right to sue. The court sided with the widow's brother.

John Brown and a group of 18 followers attacked and seized control of a US arsenal in Harpers ferry VA, Brown hoped to inspire a slave uprising, however it did not occur, he was put down by state and federal army. He and 6 others were hung.
