    The Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise of 1820 did many things in the start to end the states if slavery. It prohibited slavery in the northern part of the Louisiana perchance (above the 30 30’ line). It allowed the admission of Missouri as a slave state and Main as a free state.
  • Benjamin Lundy begins publishing the Genius of Universal Emancipation

     Benjamin Lundy begins publishing the Genius of Universal Emancipation
    Bejamin Lundy was a Quaker whom was very trobled with the morality of the slave trade. In 1821 he he began publishing the anti-slavery newspaper, Genius of Universal Emancipation. Lundy also travelled extensively searching for suitable places where runaway slaves could settle and was a big part in leading to emancpaition.
  • Missouri is admitted to the Union as a slave state.

    Missouri is admitted to the Union as a slave state.
    As a result of the Missouri Compromise, Missori is admitted to the union as a slave state. A minor set back on the road to emanciaption.
  • Garrison begins publishing The Liberator

    Garrison begins publishing The Liberator
    William Lloyd Garrison was the writter of "The Liberator." The Liberator was the first major published newspaper to demand the immediate end to slavery. This work opened a lot of people's eyes about the wrongness of slavery at that time. One of the most powerful quotes was on his first issue when he stated "I WILL BE HEARD." Geogria even offered money to anyone who would bring him to the state for trial they didn't like how much he was speaking out against slavery.

    Formation of the the American Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia
    William Garrison along with about 60 other delegates, men and woman, blacks and whites start the Anti-Slavery Society in Philidelpia. This is anothet small step that lead up to the freedom of slaves.

  • A leading antislavery weekly begins to publish Uncle Tom's Cabin

    A leading antislavery weekly begins to publish Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was the the second best selling book of the 19th centry only following te BIble. It was a book written all about anti slavery and was said to "lay the groundwork for the Civil War." Even when Lincoln met with Stowe he satated "So this is the little lady who started this great war."
  • Passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act

     Passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act opens Kansas and Nebraska territories to white settlement and repeals the Missouri Compromise line restricting slavery in the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase.
  • Garrison publicly burns a copy of the U.S. Constitution

    Garrison publicly burns a copy of the U.S. Constitution
    William Garrison makes a public scene by burning a copy of the U.S. consitition and stateing that it was "a covenant with death and an agreement with Hell." Garrison felt this strongly about the abolition he of slavery. He felt that the very idea of slavery was unconstitutional. This made a big impact on the public getting them to better understand the wrongness of slavery.

    Lincoln, a great, well repescted president was re-elected beating George B. McClellan.

    On November 6th 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States, Lincoln was a strong believer in the abolishion of slavery. He influced many peolple to also oppose slavery and worked to end slavery.

  • North Carolina becomes the last state to secede

     North Carolina becomes the last state to secede
    Following Arkansas, Tennessee, and Virginia into the Confederacy, North Carolina becomes the last state to secede. Many states secede from the union, this poses many problems for the states, become harder and harder to keep everyone and everything together.
  • Free all slaves in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida

    General David Hunter declares free all slaves in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. General David Hunter was a strong oppser of slavery. He worked with Lincoln to abloish it everwhere in teh union.
  • Kentucky, Missorui. Maryland, and Delaware start emancipation

    President Lincoln supports General Hunter's emancipation edict and urged the border states (Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Delaware) to embrace gradual, compensated emancipation

    Another big step taken for emacipation when cngress offically prohibits slavery in the terriories.
  • Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation

     Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation
    Given by Lincoln, this annoced that all slaves in rebellion will be declared free. It pledges money to those slaves states not in rebellion and will adopt emancipation.

    issued by President Lincoln; it declares free all slaves in the Confederate states (except Tennessee, southern Louisiana, and parts of Virginia) and announces the Union's intention to enlist black soldiers and sailors.
