President Polk announced that there has been gold found in California. This started the Gold Rush where 80,000 individuals headed to California. The first wave was in 1849 which became the "49ers" football team. -
The first blood of the Civil War was spilled when a slave owner tried to recapture his former slaves who were in the town of Christiana, Pennsylvania. When the slave owner arrived he was met by armed men who shot and killed him.
