    Missouri Compromise
    In 1820 a proposal by Henry Clay allowed for Missouri to join the union as a slave state. It also prohibited slavery in all the states and territories north of the Missouri southern border.

  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    Nat Turners Rebellion
    In Southampton Virginia Nat Turner lead a rebellion against white slaves owners and used violence to make a difference. Nat and his followers killed over 60 whites, until the rebellion was stopped after a few days. The rebellion caused fear for the whites, they responded by killing any slave involved with the rebellion, and creating stricter slave laws and codes.

    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise allowed for California to be a free state, It also split the Mexican cession in two separate territories, New Mexico and Utah. The territories could choose to be slave-holding or free states. The slave trade was abolished in the district of Columbia, and congress strengthened fugitive slave acts and required any person to aid in the return of runaway slaves.

    Uncle Toms Cabin
    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Toms cabin based off of the life of a slave. The novel let people become aware of how bad slavery was. It created a eye opening awakening to slavery in the North, while in the south they denied the books way of slavery. The book became the biggest seller, second to the Bible.

    Bleeding Kansas
    In 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska act passed which allowed the people to decide whether to have slavery or not based on a popular vote. This lead to people who were pro slavery and anti slavery to go to these states and hope to change slavery by outweighing the other side. With both types of people in an area there was many fights in which a total of 56 people were killed. In the end both Kansas and Nebraska became anti slavery states.

    Dread Scott was a slave in Virginia who fought for his freedom to the Supreme Court. In the end of the trial it was declared since Scott was a slave he was considered property and had no legal rights. This affected the goverment and the society during the time because of the decision, slaves stayed as property and this caused frustration to anti-slavery supporters
  • John Browns raid

    John Browns raid
    John Brown was the leader of a group of abolonist made up of whites and blacks. He and his group tried to raid a government arsenal so they could arm southern slaves. In the end he was caught and hung, his influenced caused a military preparation for the future.

    As Lincoln was elected as president southern states began to fear him and seceded from the union due to Lincolns anti-slavery beliefs.

    In 1860 southern states left the United States and created The Confederation made up of :Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Arkansas, South Carolina.
  • Battle Of Fort Sumter

    Battle Of Fort Sumter
    As southern states began to seced from the union federal forts were now in those states. Lincoln ordered for supplies to be sent to the fort hoping that they take action and fire the first shot and begin the war. The confederates did just that and the civil war was started.
