Ancient Chinese Dynasties

  • Period: 2070 BCE to 1600 BCE

    Xia Dynasty

    Established by Yu the Great. The final king of the Xia Dynasty was overthrown by the first king of the Shang Dynasty. This dynasty is considered mostly mythological, but there is some evidence that at least some parts of it happened.
  • Period: 1046 BCE to 256 BCE

    Zhou Dynasty

    Established by King Wen. It was the longest-lasting Chinese dynasty. Replaced the Shang Dynasty. First dynasty to use the "Mandate of Heavens" argument.
  • Period: 551 BCE to 479 BCE

    Confucius

    Chinese philosopher who lived during the 6th century BCE.
  • Period: 221 BCE to 206 BCE

    Qin Dynasty

    One of the shorter dynasties. Ended when Liu Bang became king of Han, beginning the Han dynasty.
  • Period: 206 BCE to 220

    Han Dynasty

    One of the longest dynasties. Established by Liu Bang, officially ending the Qin dynasty.
  • Period: Jan 1, 618 to Jan 1, 907

    Tang Dynasty

    Golden age of reform and cultural advancement. Gunpowder, air condition, gas stoves, and more originated in Tang Dynasty.
