  • Indian Removal Act Passed

    Indian Removal Act Passed
    This act was passed in Congress. It forced multiple Native American tribes to relocate from their homes east of the Mississippi River and move west of it. The act stated that the Native Americans would be compensated with new land west of the Mississippi. They were forced to relocate following the passago of this act and although they were promised new land, the land continued to be taken away from them even once they had made it west of the Mississippi.

    Trail of Tears Begins
    The Trail of Tears was the event that ensued following the pssage of the Indian Removal Act. It is called the Trail of Tears because of the sad things that occured during it. Thousands of Native Americans were forced to migrate on foot hundreds and hundreds of miles without any good rest, food, or water. They had to go by way of foot. Often times, they became exhausted and collapsed while walking. By the end of trail of tears it is estimated that 4,000 members of the Cherokee nation died.

    Treaty of Fort Laramie
    This treaty was enacted between the Sioux and the American Government. The goal of this treaty was to brong peace between the white man and the Sioux and was an attempt to end the pressing conflict between the two. In the treaty, the Native Americans were given the land of the Black Hills and the ability to settle there. However, as time progressed we will see that this treaty was not always obeyed by the United States.
  • Custer's Last Stand

    Custer's Last Stand
    Custer's Last Stand, also known as the Battle of Little Bighorn, was a battle between George Custer and 700 of his soldiers and multiple diffferent Indian tribes. One of the leaders for the Indians was Crazy Horse. It resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Indians as they killed around 240 of Custer's 250 men. Custer proceeded to this battle even following warnings that there were thousands of Indians there prepared for battle. Tensions between Indians and the U.S.

  • Ghost Dance

    Ghost Dance
    The Ghost Dance was a religious movement that came about in response to the persecution that Native Americans were facing from white men. The goal of the dances was to unite the living and dead and to bring peace to the Native Americans living throughout the West. It was brought about by Wovoka who had a prophecy that there would be a peaceful end to the harships brought upon the Native Americans by the White Man.

  • Indian Citizenship Act

    This act allowed all Native Americans living on reservations to become full citizens of the United States with all rights enumerated to the people in the Constitution. Some felt that this corrected most of the previous wrongs and made everything equal. However, this was not the view that all of the Native Americans had. Many turned down the offer and preferred to just have citizenship with their tribe.
  • Operation Geronimo

    Operation Geronimo
    Operation Geronimo was carried out in Abbottabad, Pakistan resulting in the death of Osama Bin Landen. However, the name sparked lots of controversy among a small group of people living in the United State; Native Americans. Geronimo was a POW that was captured from the Indians and died as such in custody of the U.S. His grandson spoke out stating that the family felt extrmeely offended over the use of Geronimo's name when dealing with the Al Qaeda leader.
